Studying a single course

Studying a single or individual course is a good way to upskill and learn more about a particular topic, particularly if you've been working for a few years.

When you successfully complete your chosen course, you’ll receive a Certificate of Proficiency, and your results are recorded on your academic transcript. If you decide to study further, the course could also be cross-credit towards a qualification later on.

How to choose a single course

Technically you could study any course in a programme – but you do need to meet the entry requirements. Some courses have prerequisites; other courses you need to have studied before that give you the foundational knowledge for this course.

You can use our course search to find courses you may be interested in. Keep the following in mind when choosing a course:

  • Subject you’re interested in (for example business strategy, entrepreneurship or artificial intelligence)
  • The level of the course – the first number in the course code shows the level of the course (for example, HIST500 is a level 5 history course)
  • Prerequisites – level 5 courses generally don’t have prerequisites, but many level 6 and 7 courses do

How much time will you need?

On average, you can expect to spend about 150 hours on a 15-point course each semester. Each semester is about 15 weeks long. This could mean:

  • Per course: 30-50 hours of class time (lectures, tutorials, workshops and labs) & 100-120 hours for you to study and do assignments
  • Per week: 2-3 hours of class time & 7-8 hours for studying and assignments

If the course you're studying is worth more than 15 points, you'll need to spend a little more time on your studies.
