Intermediate te reo Māori courses

Our intermediate te reo Māori courses extend on the spoken and written language taught in our beginner courses. These courses are taught with a minimum of 50% spoken and written te reo Māori, with a view to working towards full immersion.

Intermediate te reo course overview

Topics covered include Tūwāhi (past, present, and future location), Whakakāhoretanga (different forms of negation including negating passive sentences), Pātai Hāngū – questions using the passive voice, Te Whakataurite (extending on the similarities and differences between people and things), Whakapapa (how to recite genealogy), Mihimihi/ Whakawhanake (expanding on mihi), Kīwaha and Whakataukī/whakatauākī (the use of proverbial sayings and aphorisms) amongst other topics.

Prerequisites

  • To enrol in MAOR601, you must complete MAOR506
  • To enrol in MAOR602, you must complete MAOR601

If you have not completed the prerequisites at AUT, we may ask you to complete a Recognition of Prior Learning test (RPL).

Who are the intermediate te reo Māori courses suitable for?

  • People who already know some Māori but are looking to expand their skills and knowledge
  • Open to domestic and international students

After completing this course

After successfully completing the intermediate course, you can undertake the advanced te reo Māori course.

We offer classes on different days, at different times and on different campuses. Choose the class that suits you best.

Your enrolment in this course will only be complete after you’ve paid your course fees. You can pay fees online, on any AUT campus or by fees invoice. If you haven’t paid your fees within two weeks and 10 days before your course starts, your enrolment will be cancelled. If your employer is paying your fees, please provide a purchase order, with your employer's contact and billing details before the course starts. AUT reserves the right to cancel courses that don’t have enough students. If this happens, you’ll be given at least 2 or 3 days’ notice and can transfer to another start date for this course.
