Do you need help with communicating in everyday situations in New Zealand? The free ILN English language classes at AUT are for people with refugee and migrant backgrounds who want to improve their English.

Free English language classes in Auckland City

Learn English at AUT in the centre of Auckland:

  • Classes are 3 days a week, 10am to 2pm
  • Class levels from absolute beginner to intermediate level
  • Learn in a supportive environment
  • Specific literacy support available if needed

These classes are part of the New Zealand government’s free Intensive Literacy and Numeracy (ILN (ESOL)) programme to support people with refugee and migrant backgrounds.

Who can join ILN English language classes at AUT

You need:

  • Permanent Residence or a Residence Visa; or
  • Refugee or Asylum Seeker status; or
  • To be the partner of a NZ Citizen or Permanent Resident on a specific Partnership Visa

You are not eligible if you:

  • Are under 19 years old
  • Have more than 120 NZQCF credits
  • Hold one of these:
    • Standard Work Visa
    • Standard Visitors Visa
    • Student Visa
    • Working Holiday Visa

How to register for ILN English language classes at AUT

  1. Email Rose or Shanessa with your name and contact details.
  2. You will be invited for an interview.
  3. At the interview, we will check your documents and your English level.
  4. Then, when a place becomes available, we will contact you.

Do you need a higher-level English course?

You can study at the AUT English Language Centre, and enrol in an academic English course or IELTS preparation course to prepare for university study at AUT.
