Money matters: costs and funding options for university study

Cost is an important factor when thinking about university study. Read below for information about the costs associated with studying at AUT, and the different options on offer to help fund and support your child's education.

Cost of university study

Tuition fees depend on a student's programme and the combination of their courses. The AUT website has details about domestic student course fees and information about any other study-related costs that may be applicable depending on your child’s course. There are different fees for international students and for postgraduate study.

If your child is planning to start university for the first time, they may be eligible for fees-free support. Eligible students starting tertiary study receive one year of full-time study fees free.

See the Fees Free website to see if your child is eligible.

Scholarships

AUT offers a wide range of scholarships and awards available to students at all stages of their university study. See the scholarships and awards part of our website for a current list of scholarships offered by AUT and external funders, as well as application forms and closing dates. Some scholarships are offered specifically for secondary school students who will be starting their tertiary education at AUT.

A scholarship can offer more than financial assistance – it can also offer new opportunities and experiences for the recipients.

Student loans and student allowances

Full-time domestic students may qualify for a student loan or allowance. A student loan covers compulsory fees, course-related costs and living costs. A student allowance is a weekly payment to help with students' living expenses while they study. Students have to pay back a student loan but do not have to pay back a student allowance. Student loans and allowances are administered and paid by StudyLink. Students can apply for a loan or allowance before their enrolment at AUT is complete. The application process can take some time, so it’s a good idea to apply as early as possible.

Find out more on the StudyLink website.

Accommodation costs

Living on campus is a great option for students who are new to AUT or are from out of Auckland. The cost of campus accommodation will depend on the type of room and the length of the contract (one semester or the full academic year). Some of AUT’s school leaver scholarships cover the cost of staying in AUT accommodation.

Internet cost

There is free wifi access to the internet at all three AUT Campuses. All AUT students get 40GB of internet data allowance per month and can use free and secure wifi when they’re on campus. The Student Hub offers support and advice for students to ensure they have secure internet access.
