Permeating the socio-cultural study of gastronomy is the often subtle but persuasive influence of politics, power and social justice. This is driven by larger economic forces. Students will examine the politics of food as a domestic product and as global commodity by relating consumption to economic flows, cultural practice, trade policy, and globalisation. This will be achieved through analysing food not just as a means of nutrition, but as a political, cultural and economic product to be consumed.
