Yash Layazawala

Master of Applied Finance student

His goal is to enter the investment banking industry in New Zealand, says Yash Layazawala, who came to AUT to study a Master of Applied Finance.

“I initially pursued an undergraduate degree in law, but soon realised that I didn’t see myself pursuing law for the rest of my life. Having always maintained a passionate interest in finance, I knew it was the right time to shift careers. AUT’s Master of Applied Finance enabled me to transition to finance through a master’s degree without requiring prior knowledge or qualifications in the field.

“What I liked about the Master of Applied Finance was that it was already well-established at AUT, and had been offered for over five years, something few other universities in New Zealand offered. It is well-developed, covers a breadth of knowledge and is part of the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program, meaning there is considerable overlap between what we’re taught and the CFA curriculum.”

The right choice
Now well on his way towards building a career in finance, Yash says the switch to finance and enrolling in AUT’s Master of Applied Finance was the best career decision he has made.

“It’s an extremely well-rounded offering, with great lecturers, and tailored and engaging course content. I’ve enjoyed the practicality of my courses and their real-world application. It allows me to put into perspective how what I learn in the classroom is applied in the industry, and gives me exposure to the skillsets needed to thrive in a career in finance. I also appreciate the approachability of the professors and their willingness to help students.

“Furthermore, I appreciate the exposure AUT provides, and the fact that I get to meet students and professors from diverse and varied backgrounds. Other aspects of my studies I’ve enjoyed are the facilities available to students, including the trading room and postgraduate student study rooms, and all the clubs, societies and events. I’m also proud of being chosen to be a postgraduate student representative for the AUT Business School.”

There are a few staff and student services he has particularly appreciated.

“Dr Prasad Hedge, a lecturer for two courses in my first trimester, always broke down complex topics into extremely easy-to-grasp pieces. This made the overall learning experience enjoyable and smooth. He was always ready to answer any of my questions and was a big influence in helping me place first in those courses. I’ve also found the team at the AUT Employability Lab to be extremely knowledgeable and welcoming. They host a range of workshops tailored towards prepping you for job applications as well as helping you be industry ready. Munaal Abdali, in particular, guided me through the intricacies involved in applying for a job, and she has been encouraging and supportive of all my endeavours.”

Advice for other students
Yash – who expects to graduate later this year and is currently honing his skills as a venture analyst intern at AUT Ventures – has some great advice for other students.

“Always be deliberate in what you do. You may not have a clear picture of what interests you or what the way forward is, but as long as you have a general idea, don’t hesitate to take that next step. Be intentional in your decisions and chase what you believe aligns with your goals, both personal and professional.”

Take advantage of every opportunity the university has to offer, he adds.

“Connect and engage with lecturers, mingle and socialise with students from all backgrounds, and explore new offerings – you never know what may work out for you. Don’t be afraid to try new things during your time at university.”
