Educator, Learning Steps Childcare Centre
Master of Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood)

He loves building connections with children and their family members, says Yang Song who completed a Master of Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood) and now works as an educator at the Learning Steps Childcare Centre.

“Children always inspire me in different aspects, and I can learn a lot from the different cultural backgrounds of the children and parents I meet through my role at the Learning Steps Childcare Centre.

“Because I’ve been a teacher for years and I love kids, I decided to enrich my teaching knowledge in the early childhood area by enrolling in the Master of Teaching and Learning. One thing from my studies I often apply in my role now is the TAI (Teaching as Inquiry) model to help me design, observe and improve our teaching programmes to make them suitable for different learners. Our centre manager has even given me a recognition for this approach.”

Choosing AUT
Originally from China, Yang says deciding to come to AUT for his studies was easy.

“What I liked about AUT is that it emphasizes practical education, and offers a supportive and diverse community, which enhances both your academic and personal growth. Additionally, AUT is located in Auckland, which offers many vibrant cultural and professional opportunities.”

It's a decision he certainly hasn’t regretted.

“I really appreciated the teamwork and the staff spirit of supporting students. Whenever there was anything I tried to conquer, all the lecturers were interested in my progress and abundant resources would always be provided.”

Supported to thrive
Yang, who was awarded an AUT International Scholarship – Faculty of Culture and Society for his studies, says he is grateful for all the support he received while he was completing his Master of Teaching and Learning.

“I’d like to say thank you to all of the education staff members. Thank you for your professional behaviour and your academic background! A special thank you to Dr Sarah Probine, Dr Lynley Tulloch and Dr Rebecca Hopkins – you showed us high ethical standards as educators, and that has had a profound impact on my career.”

He has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own AUT journey.

“You just need to do your best and leave the rest to the university. AUT will always be behind you and support you. Believe me, AUT will exceed your expectation.”
