Senior Data & Analytics Consultant, Cognizant
Master of Computer and Information Sciences with Honours (First Class)
He enjoys working with data and analytics in his role at IT services and consulting company Cognizant, says Master of Computer and Information Sciences alumnus Trong Phu (Justin) Phan who came to AUT as an international student from Vietnam.
“I have the privilege of engaging in diverse projects with a range of clients, enabling me to stay abreast of the latest technologies. Leveraging my expertise and extensive experience, I contribute to business transformations. Witnessing the tangible benefits my work brings to clients fills me with satisfaction.”
He has already achieved a number of milestones in his career that he is particularly proud of.
“I’ve consistently ranked among the top performers at my company, earning commendations from clients for my contributions to various projects. This positive feedback underscores my commitment to excellence and my ability to deliver impactful results that exceed expectations.
“I’ve also dedicated myself to expanding my skillset by obtaining several prestigious certifications, including the Azure Data Engineer certification, the Snowflake certification, as well as two specialty-level certifications from Amazon Web Services. I take great pride in these accomplishments as they affirm my expertise and readiness to tackle complex challenges in the ever-evolving landscape of data and analytics.”
Feeling inspired
Witnessing the rapid evolution of technology, and its profound impact on businesses and everyday life, inspired him to take on postgraduate study in computer and information sciences, says Justin who had worked in a technology consulting firm before joining AUT.
“Given my frequent engagement with data, I found myself drawn to the field of data science. While comparing the top universities, I found that AUT appeared to be the best match for my objective. AUT’s programme is known for being taught by industry experts, with dynamic and engaging lectures, and a curriculum that is constantly updated to reflect the latest advancements in the field. This emphasis on real-world relevance ensures that students are well-prepared to tackle the challenges of the industry upon graduation.”
He says his time at AUT was filled with meaningful experiences, practical learning opportunities and supportive relationships that have all contributed to his personal and professional growth.
“Many of our classes involved practical projects and simulations, which not only solidified my theoretical knowledge but also equipped me with valuable practical skills I could immediately apply in my career. Another highlight was the vibrant and diverse community at AUT. I actively participated in extracurricular activities and student organisations, and had the opportunity to collaborate with students from various cultural backgrounds, which enriched my learning experience and broadened my perspective.
“My time at AUT was filled with enlightening moments, but one that truly stands out is the guidance and inspiration I received from my research project supervisor, Associate Professor Sira Yongchareon. During our discussions about my sensor-based human activity recognition research, his insights opened my eyes to the immense potential of this field. His ability to translate complex concepts into practical applications and his dedication to advancing our understanding of human behaviour through technology inspired me deeply.”
