3rd-year student, Bachelor of Visual Arts Te Tohu Paetahi mō Toi Ataata
She chose to study visual arts because she is an artist at heart, says Tohu Wairua Aroha Harris who is completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts Te Tohu Paetahi mō Toi Ataata.
“Visual language has always been my most effective way of communicating – creating feels like second nature to me. For that reason, this programme felt like the perfect fit. When I graduate, I’d love to be in a career that lets me be creative and express my creativity.”
AUT was an obvious choice for her.
“When choosing a university, I was drawn to the architecture, the art displayed across campus and even the way people dressed. These elements spoke to a vibrant, creative community where artistic expression was clearly encouraged. I knew this was the environment where my creativity would not only be supported but celebrated. I wanted to be part of that.”
A sense of community
Being surrounded by likeminded people is what she loves most about studying visual arts at AUT, says Tohu who received a McDonald's Te Tai Tokerau Scholarship to support her studies.
“Having a community that values art just as much as I do has been a pleasant experience. Seeing others succeed in this choice of career also reassures me that It’s possible. If you’re looking for a university with a strong sense of community that genuinely cares about its students, AUT is the place.
“Throughout my degree, I’ve experienced this support firsthand, for example when I lost a family member. AUT was incredibly understanding and supportive, giving me the time I needed to grieve. I also took advantage of the counselling services, which were truly amazing and played a huge role in helping me through that difficult time.”
She already had a few achievements she is particularly proud of.
“This year, I was offered a commission by the AUT Pou Māori team to create a series of artworks depicting the nine stars of Matariki, together with my classmate Hope Manaakitia Korewha. In 2023, I also received the Studio Art Supplies Award.”
Advice for other students
Now in the final year of her studies, Tohu has some great advice for other students.
“My advice to other students is to choose a degree that you truly love and are passionate about. That passion will motivate you to get out of bed, attend lectures and push through when things get tough. It was what kept me going when I wasn’t sure if I could make it. University is challenging, so pursuing something you love will make the journey easier.”
Celebrate your progress, she adds.
“Don’t forget to reward yourself when you accomplish something along the way.”
