Sarah Miller

3rd-year student, Bachelor of International Hospitality Management in Hospitality Management and Marketing

She has always been passionate about serving others, says Sarah Miller who is studying a Bachelor of International Hospitality Management in Hospitality Management and Marketing.

“I find satisfaction in creating unforgettable memories for other people, so I thought I’d use those passions to pursue a degree in hospitality. I also have a passion for entrepreneurship and social media marketing; therefore the Bachelor of International Hospitality Management was attractive to me because I knew I could expand all these areas of interest and use them to turn my studies into a career. The Bachelor of International Hospitality Management has provided an all-round learning experience.”

Sarah loves that she can build her own degree, and choose the courses and subjects that interest her.

“I have a great interest in marketing, particularly sales and digital media marketing. I decided to also major in marketing, as hospitality management and marketing are two sectors I’m passionate about. I believe the two subjects can be interrelated, providing so many options for my future career. I’ve been able to incorporate marketing aspects into my hospitality management courses, reaping maximum benefits from both subjects.

“Another great benefit for me is being able to create my own schedule, which has enabled me to continue to work during the semester, therefore building my experience and allowing me to remain financially stable while I’m studying. Once I graduate, I’d ideally like to go into PR event management and planning, or working for a marketing agency that promotes food, fashion, lifestyle, or health and fitness.”

Choosing AUT
Sarah says she initially chose AUT because of its great reputation.

“I had heard really good things about the way courses are taught at AUT, and about the value AUT places on equipping students with the knowledge and skills to build a successful career. I appreciated the level of practicality within AUT courses to prepare you for the working world.”

She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to other students.

“I’ve met such amazing people over the past three years, including both lecturers and my peers. The hospitality department is supportive and encouraging, and has provided several opportunities to further my development and experience.

“The amazing thing about my degree is that it doesn’t limit you to one career sector. The Bachelor of International Hospitality Management opens doors to so many avenues, even more so with the flexibility to include subjects from across AUT. The combination of theory and practical components truly makes this degree stand out. I’d highly recommend this degree to anyone who wants to grow their expertise in one of the biggest sectors in New Zealand.”

Advice for other students
Sarah’s advice for other students is simple: don’t listen to what everyone says about ‘C’s get degrees’.

“The workload can be a bit much at times, but if you put in the work, designate time to completing assignments, plan ahead of time and value the fact that you’re fortunate to be attending university. This can be the most valuable time for you and a chance to reap maximum benefits.

“You have three years to prioritise yourself, to equip yourself and to give yourself the opportunity to build your dream career. Don’t take this time for granted – you won’t regret putting 100% into your studies.”
