3rd-year student, Bachelor of Business in Information Systems and Marketing
What he likes most about AUT are the strong industry connections, modern learning approach and hands-on experiences, says Saksham Chawla who came to AUT as an international student from India to study a Bachelor of Business.
“I’ve always been passionate about understanding consumer behaviour and how technology can enhance business strategies. The Bachelor of Business in Information Systems and Marketing enables me to explore both areas, providing a perfect balance between creativity and analytical thinking.
“I’ve really enjoyed the practical learning experiences at AUT, including working on real business projects and engaging in industry discussions. The combination of theory and hands-on learning has been invaluable in preparing me for the professional world.”
Expecting to graduate later this year, he already has a good idea how he sees his future after university.
“Once I graduate, I’d love to work in marketing, sales or IT consultancy. I’m passionate about blending creativity with tech-driven solutions and making a real impact on customer experiences. In the long term, I want to help businesses grow by understanding people better and leveraging smart, innovative strategies.”
Rewarding experiences
Saksham says during his time at AUT he has had the opportunity to be involved in some amazing things.
“For example, I ran a successful student club, NZ Hindu Students Forum AUT, with strong and engaged members, which was such a rewarding experience. We even won the award for the best cultural club last year, which is something I’m very proud of.
“I also served as an AUT student ambassador, RUOK advisor and employability ambassador, helping other students with their development, wellbeing and career readiness. I also managed major events like AUT Diwali and Raas Rangeela 2.0, took part in multiple AUT marketing shoots and participated in the Shadow a Leader programme. All of these experiences enabled me to connect with diverse people, build leadership skills and create lifelong memories.”
He credits a number of AUT staff and student services with supporting him throughout his time at university.
“The AUT Student Hub and Employability and Careers team have been a huge support for me, especially when it came to academic and career guidance. My lecturers in both marketing and information systems have also played a big role in my journey – their support, encouragement, and industry insights really helped shape my learning experience. I’m especially grateful to Dr Kasuni Weerasinghe, my lecturer in the digital transformation and social impact course, who guided me, and even today is always there to clear up my doubts and give advice.”
Advice for other students
Saksham’s advice for other students is simple: get involved as much as you can.
“Join clubs, take on leadership roles, attend events and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Some of my best memories and biggest growth moments came from stepping outside of my comfort zone. AUT offers so many opportunities – you just have to say yes to them.”
He wouldn’t hesitate to recommend studying at AUT.
“AUT offers a supportive learning environment, incredible networking opportunities and so many chances to gain real-world experience. I’ve grown so much here; not just academically but also personally, and I genuinely believe AUT sets students up for success.
“As an international student, my journey hasn’t always been easy. Moving to a new country, adapting to a different culture, balancing studies, work and personal life – it was definitely challenging at times. But every challenge helped me grow stronger and more confident in myself. If I can do it, you can too. Don’t let fear or uncertainty hold you back. Step out of your comfort zone, say yes to new opportunities, and believe in your ability to thrive. Your journey at AUT will shape you in ways you can’t even imagine – just trust the process and keep moving forward.”
