Project Manager – City Rail Link, Auckland Transport
Master of Engineering Project Management with Honours (First Class)
He loves working on a transformative infrastructure project that will have a lasting impact on Aucklanders, says Rodel Casem who studied a Master of Engineering Project Management and is a project manager on Auckland Transport’s City Rail Link.
“One of the achievements I’m most proud of in my career is being part of the City Rail Link project. This large-scale infrastructure project has been a significant milestone, not only because of its complexity but also because of the impact it will have on the community. Being able to contribute to a project that aims to improve public transport and enhance the quality of life for residents is incredibly fulfilling.”
He appreciates the dynamic and challenging nature of his role.
“Every day brings new problems to solve and opportunities to innovate. It keeps the work engaging and rewarding. The collaborative environment where I get to work with diverse teams of professionals is another aspect I truly enjoy – it enables me to learn from others and continuously grow. I’m also proud of receiving an Innovation in a Box Idea Award at Auckland Transport, which recognises ideas from employees on how we can improve the way we deliver our capital projects.”
Balancing study with work
Returning to university while maintaining a full-time job was both challenging and rewarding, Rodel admits.
“I chose the Master of Engineering Project Management because it provides a strong foundation in both engineering and project management, which are essential skills for my role. AUT's emphasis on practical, hands-on learning and its strong industry connections were key factors in my decision. I have to admit that attending lectures and studying after a long day at work required a great deal of discipline and time management, but it also provided a unique opportunity to immediately apply what I learned in class to real-world projects.”
He says his studies helped him gain valuable insights and opportunities that are directly applicable to his current job.
“One thing that particularly struck me was the importance of proactive risk identification and mitigation strategies, which we covered during a lecture on project risk management. This realisation highlighted how crucial these concepts are in real-world applications, especially in large-scale infrastructure projects like the City Rail Link. This insight has helped me manage projects more effectively to ensure their successful completion.
“Another significant highlight of my time at AUT was mastering the juggling act of balancing work, student responsibility and my personal life. The supportive environment at AUT with its emphasis on practical, hands-on learning and strong industry connections made it easier to navigate this challenging period, and encouraged me to push my boundaries and grow, both personally and professionally.”
Advice for other students
Rodel’s advice for other students is simple: embrace the journey and make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.
“Always be willing to learn and explore new ideas. The world of engineering and project management is constantly evolving, and staying curious will help you stay ahead. Take advantage of AUT's strong industry connections and collaborative learning environment. Build relationships with your peers, lecturers and industry professionals – these connections can open doors to valuable opportunities and insights.
“Juggling work, studies and personal life can be challenging, but it's essential to find a balance. Prioritise your tasks and manage your time effectively to ensure you can excel in all areas. Always try to apply the concepts and skills you learn in class to real-world situations. This practical approach will help you understand the material better and prepare you for your future career.”
Don't hesitate to seek help when you need it, he adds.
“AUT offers a range of resources and support services to help you succeed. Make use of these resources, whether it's academic assistance or personal support.”
