Technology Consultant, Cybersecurity, EY
Bachelor of Business in Information Systems & Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences in Networks and Cybersecurity conjoint programmes
What he enjoys most about his job is the chance to learn new technologies, says Rinesh Sean Rattan who is now a technology consultant focusing on cybersecurity, working for EY, one of the largest professional services networks in the world.
“Cybersecurity is always evolving, especially with AI, which brings new challenges and risks. This keeps me on my toes and helps me improve my skills. The demand for cybersecurity expertise makes my role exciting and impactful. I love staying ahead of threats and finding solutions to protect our clients' data.”
He enjoys the positive impact he can make through his work.
“I find great satisfaction in protecting people's sensitive information and business data from cybercrime. Knowing that my work helps safeguard individuals and organisations is incredibly rewarding and motivates me to stay vigilant.”
Laying the foundation for his career
Proud of completing his Bachelor of Business & Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences conjoint programmes in only three and a half years, Rinesh says the highlights of his time at AUT were numerous and impactful.
“The programmes at AUT are well-rounded and forward-thinking, with many different avenues to specialise in. I had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with a wide variety of tools and technologies that are currently employed in many large corporations. This practical exposure was fantastic as it enabled me to develop my technical skills.
“The friendly and supportive lecturers were always available to address any concerns or questions I had, making the learning environment incredibly welcoming. The AUT culture stood out as well – the university genuinely cares about its students and fosters an inclusive atmosphere. I also found the student services to be immensely helpful, from planning my degree to accessing the free CV check service and receiving tips for professional interviews. My time at AUT was enriching and transformative, providing a solid foundation for my future endeavours.”
He still fondly remembers the many AUT staff who guided him throughout university.
“Nirisha Niranjan and Melanie Barr from the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law partnerships team were like my university mums – they were both super supportive and opened the door to numerous opportunities and industry events I wouldn’t have even thought about. During my time in the AUT student ambassador programme, Renee Lotasoso and Maddy Jahnke were absolute fun to hang around, always provided the best support and vibes, and opened up different opportunities for me. Among my lecturers and teaching assistants I’m especially grateful to Associate Professor Harminder Singh, Shikha Shethia and Professor Angsana Techatassanasoontorn for all their support during my studies.”
Advice for other students
Rinesh – who graduated from AUT in 2023 and is proud of being invited into Beta Gamma Sigma, the honours society for high-achieving business graduates – has some great advice for other students.
“The advice I’d give my first-year self is to never say no to opportunities. Life can be surprising, and many promising doors are waiting for us to open. Whether you launch on a new adventure yourself or with a group of people, don't be afraid to try new things and discover new possibilities. That’s where the most exciting part of life lies.”
He certainly knows what he is talking about and made the most of all the opportunities he was given throughout his own time at university.
“AUT presented countless opportunities for learning, interaction, exposure and practical experience, which helped me come out of my shell. For example, I was an AUT student ambassador and an RUOK advisor, was elected as a student representative, completed the AUT Edge Award, was offered an internship at Deloitte, shared my experiences at AUT’s Orientation and AUT LIVE, and featured in photos for a business marketing campaign. I also received the opportunity to complete EY’s Career Compass Programme to network and discover career opportunities within EY, and participated in AUT’s Shadow a Leader programme twice, spending a day each with senior leaders at Microsoft New Zealand and Foodstuffs New Zealand.”
