1st-year student, Bachelor of Sport and Recreation
Certificate in Sport and Recreation
The sense of friendship and encouragement between students was the most memorable aspect of UniPrep, says Riku Aupouri who is now studying a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation.
“Deciding to do UniPrep helped me gain new friends and build a support network before I formally started my university studies. It was great to see everyone unite in a collaborative learning environment and share the UniPrep experiences, including all the amazing and enjoyable theme and sports days like culture day, colour day, composing songs and doing a dance together, or playing rugby or touch with new people. These were all memorable and enjoyable.
“I initially didn't want to do UniPrep since it meant that my leisurely summer would have to finish sooner than planned. But my older brother, who works at AUT, gave me a quick rundown and I realised that by doing UniPrep I could meet new people, see and do new things, and get a taste of what university life is like. When I learned that this programme is only for first-year students, I just knew I had to go and see what it's like.”
He would highly recommend UniPrep to other students.
“UniPrep gives you a better understanding of what to expect at AUT – from academic expectations to campus life. I found it helpful for developing essential skills like time management and study techniques, which helped boost my confidence for the upcoming semester. The workshops and materials we were offered helped us develop critical skills and self-assurance, which made adjusting to university life less stressful. It's a fantastic way to meet new people, learn new things, and create unforgettable memories and enjoyable experiences. Overall, it’s a great way to ease the transition into university life!”
A passion for physical activity
After completing UniPrep at the start of the year, Riku has since gone on to study sport and recreation at AUT; first taking on the one-semester Certificate in Sport and Recreation before enrolling in a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation.
“Deciding to study sport and recreation stems from my passion for physical activity, and a desire to promote health and wellness. It’s a great way to combine my personal interests with a career that fosters wellbeing and engagement in sports and recreation. I was drawn to this field because I want to work in environments that encourage active lifestyles, whether through coaching, fitness training or community programmes. I’m driven by the idea of helping players reach their full potential, both on and off the field.”
He says the Certificate in Sport and Recreation was a great way to start studying sport and recreation.
“The Certificate in Sport and Recreation was my first semester of university and I made a lot of friends, which essentially meant that our class was fun. In addition, the teachers were incredibly friendly to everyone, and I miss them a lot.”
Feeling motivated and connected
With his first year of uni almost complete, Riku says the practical, hands-on approach at AUT has resonated with him.
“I’ve especially enjoyed the sessions where we can apply ideas to actual projects. This approach has enhanced my comprehension and makes things much more relevant. At AUT, there’s also an incredible sense of community. It's been straightforward to connect with others because the academic staff and students are so encouraging. I feel more motivated and connected as a result of this.”
He is also enjoying life as a university student.
“One of the best parts of student life has been meeting people from diverse backgrounds and forming friendships. This has expanded my perspective and made my university experience much richer. Living independently and balancing my studies has also been really rewarding. I’ve learnt a lot about managing my time and making decisions, which has helped me grow personally."
