Phoenix Petelo

1st-year student, Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biological Science

Ngāti Hine, Ngāpuhi, Samoa

From a young age he has been deeply fascinated by the core sciences, says Phoenix Petelo who is studying a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biological Science.

“I’ve always wanted to understand how things work and the specific reasons as to why they work. I chose the Bachelor of Science because I wanted to understand everything there is to the subject of science. Having to choose whether I’d want a career in chemistry or biology was hard as they’re the two sciences I’m deeply passionate about, so I decided to major in both chemistry and biological science. These subjects are critical to developing the expertise I need to aid real-world challenges. In the future, I’d love to pursue a career in the science laboratory industry, and I’m excited to deepen my knowledge to contribute to advancements that can shape the future.”

Deciding to come to AUT for his studies was easy.

“I chose AUT because of its strong reputation for innovative teaching and its commitment to preparing students for the future. AUT’s emphasis on hands-on learning and cutting-edge facilities stood out to me, especially its close connections with industries and opportunities for practical application through internships and research projects. It’s very important for me as an aspiring young scientist to be able to not only understand what I’m doing but also know how to apply it properly. Moreover, AUT also proved to be a very well-rounded diverse university, which put me at ease of finding ‘my’ set of people to help me enjoy university life better.

“I started my AUT journey by enrolling in UniPrep, which was one of the key highlights of my year. Throughout the programme I was able to transition from high school to university without any trouble. The programme ran for only five weeks, preparing fresh-minded school leavers for what life at AUT has to offer and the kind of lively faces the university is made up of. Because of UniPrep I was able to make long-lasting friends with the people I met.”

Practical and social
The hands-on projects are what he is enjoying most about his studies, says Phoenix who is proud of receiving a Kia Puawai Te Kakano Scholarship.

“Being able to work in a science-based environment has enabled me to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings, which has been both challenging and incredibly fulfilling. I’ve found that AUT handles a great balance between theoretical and practical, which makes my studies most enjoyable. I’d absolutely recommend studying at AUT – the university offers a great mix of practical and academic learning, along with strong support systems that help students succeed both personally and professionally.”

The social aspect is another highlight of his studies.

“Another aspect of my studies I appreciate is the number of friends I’ve been able to make through my degree. AUT is one of the most diverse universities Aotearoa has to offer, and I’ve been able to see that throughout my studies. The students are lively, friendly and very helpful when it comes to helping a buddy in class. I also love the diverse range of clubs and student events at AUT. These activities provide many opportunities to meet people from different backgrounds and build lasting friendships.”

Advice for other students
Phoenix has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.

“My biggest advice to other students would be to always attend classes and not watch them online. Although it may seem easier to do them online, you get a lot more done if you attend your classes and understand much more than you would if you’re catching up on the class recordings.”

Use all of the student services and support on offer, he adds.

“Make the most of every opportunity that is available for you. AUT is full of services that cater to helping student in many ways, whether that is financially, career-wise or even related to mental health.”
