Early Childhood Education Teacher, Alten Road Early Childhood Centre
Master of Teaching and Learning
She has always been passionate about positively impacting future generations, says Maliha Tazmeen who came to AUT as an international student from India to study a Master of Teaching and Learning.
“I was drawn to teaching because of its dynamic and rewarding nature. Modern-day life requires robust teachers who foster creativity, innovation and critical thinking skills among young learners, preparing them to navigate the world's complexities.
“My aspiration to instil curiosity and a love of learning in my students and leave a lasting legacy of knowledge motivated me to switch careers and take up the Master of Teaching and Learning at AUT. The programme design with pivotal courses, along with the practicum experience that is part of the degree, is what led me to opt for a master’s degree at AUT.”
Now working as a full-time early childhood education teacher for Alten Road Early Childhood Centre based at the University of Auckland, Maliha loves supporting her students’ learning.
“I enjoy engaging and creating rich opportunities to support and facilitate tamariki’s learning, and growing with the children in knowledge through reciprocal learning and teaching. I absolutely love how multicultural the centre is as we have kids and teachers from all around the globe, and I enjoy working alongside a mentor and the experienced teachers to hone my teaching practice.”
Highlights of AUT
She still has many fond memories of her time at AUT, says Maliha whose studies were supported by an AUT International Excellence Scholarship – South Asia.
“The classes with our lecturers on campus were some of the most fascinatingly thought-provoking and riveting sessions of my student life. Meeting like-minded people from different parts of the world who eventually became close friends was also an amazing experience.
“The highlights of my time at AUT included the warm welcoming, unbiased and multicultural environment of AUT, and all the support from my lecturers, peers and the student services. The rich real-time learning and teaching experiences in our teaching practicums were invaluable, and I also appreciated being asked to be the face for the programme in a marketing campaign for Indian students.”
The graduation ceremony at the end of her degree course was the icing on top, she says.
“That was a brilliant tribute to all the hard work by the students, as well as the tremendous support of their families and loved ones.”
Advice for other students
Maliha, who graduated from AUT at the end of 2023 and is proud of receiving the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Study, has some great advice for other students.
“My advice would be to always believe in your uniqueness and capability. Remember that your loved ones and your lecturers believe in you too, so keep going on to shine as brightly as you can. When it gets tough, seek help. You should never feel like you’re alone – your lecturers are always approachable for support and guidance. They will cheer you on, encourage you and keep you motivated throughout your AUT journey.
“Remember to go easy on yourself and not beat yourself up if you didn’t get the grades you were hoping for. Apply for all the scholarships you’re eligible for. Embrace every opportunity to broaden your experience and make lifelong memories, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and explore new horizons.”
She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Master of Teaching and Learning to others.
“AUT is a haven that you can rely on for your career and future. The support AUT renders to its students is unmatched – they bring to you a world-class education that will not only prepare you for your career but will also equip you with skills to handle the complexities of life.”
