Volunteer Coordinator, Rhythm and Vines
Bachelor of Arts in Event Management and Marketing
Diploma in Arts
She discovered her passion for event management through her love for live events, says Lauren Stevens who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Event Management and Marketing in August 2024.
“Attending numerous events fuelled my curiosity about the intricacies of planning and executing an event. I found myself pondering the behind-the-scenes efforts and the challenges event organisers face when bringing everything together seamlessly. This desire to understand the inner workings of events, coupled with my enthusiasm for creating memorable experiences, led me to study event management. The joy of crafting my own events is truly euphoric. Witnessing the satisfaction on someone's face when an event unfolds flawlessly and according to plan is rewarding.
“Because effective marketing is integral to the success of an event, I also decided to study marketing as part of my degree. Understanding the correct market demographic is essential to orchestrate a successful event. In the realm of event management, marketing is a vital companion that ensures the alignment of every element of the event with the expectations of the target audience.”
Since graduating earlier this year, she is now contracting at summer festivals and loves her role as a volunteer coordinator for Rhythm and Vines.
“I feel truly fortunate to have been personally invited back by Rhythm and Vines, and it’s a fantastic opportunity. Venturing into contracting at summer festivals feels like the perfect step for me. It allows me to explore a variety of live events and expand my network, which I hope will showcase my potential to industry professionals and lead to long-term opportunities.”
The right choice
Coming to AUT after a successful career in the customer service and beauty industries, Lauren says she chose AUT for her studies based on recommendations from her colleagues.
“At the time, I had colleagues pursuing the same degree at AUT who spoke highly of their experiences. Even with their positive evaluations, I was concerned about my academic performance because I was in my mid-20s and had not attended high school for a long time. My anxieties began to diminish as I researched AUT, where the emphasis on practical learning and a vibrant atmosphere became the standout features. My decision to apply was reinforced by the prospect of actively creating events, volunteering and letting my creativity flow.
“I started my studies with the Diploma in Arts before I moved into the second year of the Bachelor of Arts degree. The seamless transition into the bachelor’s degree was particularly noteworthy for me. I consider the diploma an excellent entry point for those seeking something new without committing to a full three-year programme.”
She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend studying at AUT.
“I would 1000 percent recommend AUT to others. The teaching staff are dedicated to your success, the campuses are beautiful and clean, and I was forever learning something new. I'm committed to pursuing a career in live events, particularly in the behind-the-scenes realm of event creation.”
Advice for other students
Lauren has some great advice for other students who are thinking about university study.
“Do it if you’re passionate about it and you truly enjoy it! Put all your energy and attention into making it your career. Being able to study at AUT has opened a world of prospects for me.”
Don’t worry if you’re not coming to university straight from high school, she adds.
“If you're like me and believe that 26 is too old, don’t worry; it's never too late to start studying.”
