2nd-year student, Bachelor of Science in Biological Science with a minor in Environmental Science
Everything about science amazes her, says Kayley Celine Morris who is studying a Bachelor of Science in Biological Science with a minor in Environmental Science.
“Growing up I've always wanted to study science as I enjoy learning and discovering how everything works and what everything is made up of. However, due to a lack of confidence and a few stumbles, I didn't think i was smart enough to study science.
“After moving to Melbourne from New Zealand, I ended up in a career that brought me no fulfilment. I had a daughter at the young age of 21, and after my relationship ended, I struggled to hold on to a job due to Melbourne's extremely long COVID-19 lockdown and became homeless twice. While I was sleeping on a tiny couch with my daughter at my friend's place, I decided it was time to find a stable way out. I started seeing ads of studying science, and researched studying science in New Zealand and the biology field spoke to me. I felt I had nothing left to lose, so I put me fears aside and applied to AUT. My dreams came true when I was accepted into AUT.”
Currently in the second year of her studies, she already has some big plans for her future after graduating.
“By studying such a broad subject I could move into a many different careers. My plan is to hopefully start by working in research related to animals, then move into research into genetics, being a zoologist and then, when I'm closer to retirement age, I plan to become a teacher.”
An enjoyable university environment
There have been a number of highlights throughout Kayley’s time at AUT.
“The things I’ve enjoyed the most are the content we’re covering, and the lecturers and teaching assistants. The lecturers have gone above and beyond to ensure that we understand the work, and they always answer our questions and connect with us on a friendly level. I’ve also enjoyed making friends, and the number of free activities and giveaways that happen on campus.”
Returning to study after being out of high school for six years had its challenges, she admits, but she is grateful for the support she has received.
“I’ve found it very useful to have tutorials where the lecturers explain how to best do certain assignments and provide extra resources to help. AUT offers the perfect mix of theory and practical labs, which constantly keeps me intrigued. I’d highly recommend AUT for anyone who enjoys hands-on work to learn and to keep mentally stimulated.”
Advice for other students
Kayley’s advice for other students is simple: go after your dreams!
Regardless of whether or not you think you're smart enough, if you never go for it then you will never know. A no is better than never knowing.”
Put in the hard work, she adds.
“Hard work beats talent every time. You have to find a study method that works best for you and apply it while studying; once you do that and put the time in it, you'll reach your goals. No matter what life throws at you, no matter what your situation is, you always have the power to change it through hard work. Never give up on yourself and push through every bad situation. Don't give up on your dreams.”
