Solicitor, SBM Legal
Bachelor of Laws & Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management and Employment Relations
She loves the positive difference she can make for her clients, says Karishma Zafar who studied law and business, and now works as a solicitor at SBM Legal as well as being a committee member at the New Zealand Law Society Auckland New Lawyers group.
“My role involves advising clients on various employment issues, ensuring they understand their rights, obligations and the legal processes involved. I enjoy the challenge of navigating complex legal issues and advocating for clients who often feel vulnerable due to challenging workplace situations, whether it be a company or an individual employee. Each case is different, and it’s rewarding to help people towards a fair outcome.
“Another thing I love about this role is that I have the opportunity to learn from people who are great practitioners in the field. Their insights and experiences enrich my understanding, and fuel my passion for the work we do.”
Shaping her career
She still has fond memories of studying at AUT, says Karishma who completed her business degree in 2020, followed by her law degree in 2021.
“The highlight for me were definitely the courses that had a strong emphasis on the practical application of law in real-life scenarios. The courses that included simulations, case studies and visits from guest lecturers gave me a valuable glimpse into what to expect after graduation.”
It was these practical experiences that stood out most for her.
“My time at AUT was filled with valuable achievements that shaped my career. I participated in moot competitions, which helped me develop my advocacy and public speaking skills. Additionally, I took part in internships that provided practical experience and allowed me to apply my learnings in real-world settings. These experiences not only enhanced my understanding of law but also built my confidence.”
Advice for other students
Karishma has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.
“Stay engaged and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way – whether through internships, networking events or extracurricular activities. Building relationships and gaining practical experience is just as important as your academic achievements.
“Don't hesitate to seek guidance from your lecturers and professors; they can be invaluable resources as you navigate your career path.”
