3rd-year student, Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences in Digital Services with a minor in Business Management
There is something special about AUT, says Jordan Christian Saimasi-Mika who came to AUT to study computer and information sciences and business management.
“I opted for AUT because of its diverse culture, its practical approach to learning and the vibrant student life; making it an ideal environment for my academic journey. It encourages students to want more, strive for greatness and excel in whatever they believe in.
“I’ve been fortunate to receive the AUT Find Your Greatness Scholarship and the New to UniPrep AUT Accommodation Scholarship to support my studies. These scholarships have significantly supported my university experience by easing financial burdens and allowing me to focus more on my studies. My time at AUT has enabled me to grow not only as a student, but as a person.”
An easy choice
Deciding to study computing was easy, says Jordan who is now in the final year of his degree.
“I chose to study the Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences because of my longstanding interest in computer games and the potential of technology. I decided to minor in business management as it goes hand in hand with my computer science degree and contributes towards my ultimate career choice of becoming a project manager within a tech firm, specifically aiming for a role that involves helping Pacific communities.”
The sense of community is what he has enjoyed most about his studies.
“I was quite unsure of what the life of a university student would look like, but after experiencing the various clubs and groups AUT has to offer I’ve become comfortable around campus. The hands-on experiences in my degree have also enhanced my understanding and made my studies engaging.”
Advice for other students
Jordan has some great advice for other students.
“Take every opportunity given to you with open arms. Stay curious, and learn to balance your personal and academic life. Connect with people as this may help you later down your journey, ask for help when you need it, and see every challenge as a chance to grow. Last but not least, love what you do and have fun. If you’re not doing something you love and enjoy, then you need to question your ‘why’.”
Being able to balance an academic and personal lifestyle can become overwhelming, he admits.
“This was especially evident throughout my first year at AUT. Coming fresh out of secondary school, I came with the same mindset I had in school. However, this mindset had to quickly change as I noticed that I needed to put in more work in comparison to school. By taking part in AUT’s UniPrep summer programme I was better prepared for the first-year experience at uni.”
