Jaden Movold

3rd-year student, Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

Learning early on how crucial mental resilience is inspired him to study psychology, says Bachelor of Arts student Jaden Movold who is balancing his studies with a successful sporting career as a wheelchair racer.

“I chose to study psychology because of the significant challenges I’ve faced throughout my life, including undergoing 33 major surgeries. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of resilience, mental strength and the power of mindset in overcoming adversity. I’ve had to navigate not just the physical demands but also the psychological impact of living with a disability and constantly pushing beyond limitations.

“I want to use my experiences to help others, particularly young people experiencing their own mental health challenges. Mental health is something that affects so many, yet there’s still stigma and a lack of support, especially for young people trying to navigate their emotions, pressures and personal struggles. I’ve seen firsthand how important mental strength, self-belief and the right support system are in overcoming obstacles. Whether it’s through mental health advocacy, working directly with young people or contributing to research that improves support systems, I want to dedicate my career to helping others break through barriers and believe in the power of possible.”

What he has loved most about his studies so far is being able to apply psychological concepts to real-life situations.

“For me, psychology isn’t just a degree; it’s a way to make a real impact. The courses I’ve taken have helped me better understand human behaviour, resilience and mental health; all of which connect deeply to my own journey and the work I want to do in the future. The engaging discussions and learning approach have made my studies even more meaningful. Psychology is such a broad and fascinating field, and I appreciate how every lesson has the potential to make a real difference in people’s lives.”

Balancing study and sport
In addition to his studies, this year Jaden is gearing up to compete in several major wheelchair racing events, including international competitions in England and Switzerland that will test his abilities and push him toward achieving new personal bests. His sporting achievements haven’t gone unnoticed by AUT and at the 2024 AUT Blue Awards he was named the AUT Junior Athlete of the Year; a recognition he is proud of.

“Receiving the AUT Junior Athlete of the Year award was a profound honour that validated the dedication and hard work invested in my athletic journey. The recognition served as a reminder of the progress made and the barriers broken, not just personally but within the broader context of disability sports. The AUT Blue Awards ceremony was a memorable occasion. Being recognised alongside other high-achieving students and athletes was truly motivating and reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance and hard work.”

He says that AUT has been pivotal in supporting his dual pursuits of academics and athletics, and he is excited to continue training and competing at a high level while also balancing his academic goals.

“The flexibility offered in course scheduling, coupled with access to online resources, has enabled me to manage my time effectively. The understanding and accommodation from academic staff have ensured that I can meet both my academic and training obligations without compromising on either front. AUT’s commitment to student wellbeing and success has made a significant difference in helping me stay on track with both my studies and my sporting career.

“Throughout my time at AUT, I’ve been fortunate to receive support from various staff members and services. The Disability Support Services and AUT Sport teams have been particularly instrumental in ensuring that I have the necessary accommodations to thrive academically. Their assistance, along with the encouragement from my lecturers, has been huge in navigating the challenges of university life while maintaining a rigorous training schedule for my sporting career. The support network at AUT is second to none.”

Advice for other students
Jaden’s advice for other students is simple: embrace the journey with all its challenges and triumphs.

“No matter how difficult the path may seem, remember that every challenge is an opportunity for growth, and you’re capable of more than you realise. Balancing multiple commitments requires effective time management and a clear sense of purpose, but it is possible. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, seek support when needed and use the resources available at AUT, stay focused on your goals, and never doubt your ability to overcome obstacles and create the future you envision for yourself.”

He wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to other students.

“I strongly recommend AUT. The university's dedication to student success, its inclusive culture, and the opportunities it offers for personal and professional growth make it an ideal place for higher education. Whether your interests lie in academics, sports or community engagement, AUT provides a nurturing environment to pursue and excel in those passions. It fosters a culture of innovation, resilience and real-world application; ensuring that students leave not just with a degree but with the skills and confidence to succeed in their chosen field.”
