Jacklyn Lim

Careers Engagement Manager – Operations, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand
Master of Business Administration

Jacklyn Lim says she decided to take on the MBA to develop her leadership skills and gain a deeper understanding of business management.

“I selected AUT for its strong industry connections, which provided valuable networking opportunities and practical insights I could immediately apply in my managerial role. The small but diverse classrooms fostered a collaborative learning environment, allowing for personalised attention and a rich exchange of ideas. The flexible timetable was also a significant factor, as it enabled me to balance my part-time studies with full-time work.

“The openness and accessibility of the mentors and coaches at AUT enriched my personal and professional life. Their guidance and support were instrumental in my growth, helping me navigate challenges and achieve my academic and career goals.”

She says she had a bit of a lightbulb moment during her studies.

“I still remember realising the crucial roles that both supporters and detractors played in my leadership development. My supporters provided encouragement and motivation, helping me to stay focused and confident in my abilities. On the other hand, my detractors challenged my thinking and pushed me to question my assumptions. This combination of support and constructive criticism was instrumental in shaping my mindset, and taught me the value of diverse perspectives and the importance of resilience.”

Supporting students’ career journeys
Now working for the Auckland office of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, Jacklyn loves the variety her role offers.

“I’m a myth buster, and responsible for challenging misconceptions and providing clarity about the accounting profession and careers in business. I also act as a dot connector, ensuring the seamless management and integration across various projects and initiatives within our 20-member Careers Engagement team, which operates across Australia and New Zealand. I project lead our flagship accounting internship programme, called the Achiever Program, and am part of the team that oversees the growth of the Accounting Technician Program in New Zealand.

“What I enjoy most about my job is the incredible variety; no two days are ever the same. I have the opportunity to meet a wide range of people, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences. Hearing inspiring career and life stories from these individuals is truly motivating. I’m fortunate to work in an organisation with a collaborative culture and exceptional people leaders, which makes my work environment both supportive and stimulating.”

Being able to positively impact students’ lives through her work is what she loves most about her career.

“Playing even a small part in a student’s educational journey, and witnessing their growth and success has been incredibly rewarding. These experiences have not only enriched my professional skills but also reinforced my commitment to lifelong learning and mentorship.”

Advice for other students
Jacklyn has some great advice for other students.

“My advice for future AUT students is to persevere, even when the going gets tough. The challenges you face will ultimately shape your resilience and determination.”

She also stresses the importance of making connections.

“Make an effort to connect with those around you, whether it’s in lectures, on buses or at events. You never know who you might meet and how those relationships can evolve over time. Building a network of supportive peers and mentors can greatly enrich your university experience and open doors to unexpected opportunities.”
