Senior Account Executive, One Plus One Communications
Bachelor of Communication Studies in Public Relations
She genuinely loved her degree, says Grace Ulu, who came to AUT to study a Bachelor of Communication Studies in Public Relations.
“Seeing that AUT’s comms degree encouraged students to develop an expansive and analytical worldview was what intrigued me, and it also helped that AUT is highly regarded for the Bachelor of Communication Studies. I enjoyed immersing myself in the communication theories and projects, and I left university with a deeper appreciation of empathic, transparent communication.”
Be a sponge, she advises other students.
“Absorb as much as you can and embrace the different ways of thinking.”
Opportunities to shine
Grace says one of her favourite experiences throughout her time at AUT was working as a student mentor at UniPrep, a programme designed by AUT’s Oceanian Leadership Network to help high school leavers transition to university.
“Reflecting on my time at UniPrep, I realise that my confidence grew significantly, which I attribute to the Māori and Pasifika villages surrounding me. It taught me the importance of uplifting and empowering those around us, especially those marginalised. It's not just a matter of giving people opportunities but also about equipping them with the tools and mindset to believe they're worthy of receiving them.”
Another highlight for her was being asked to deliver the graduate speech at her graduation ceremony.
“It was a moving experience for myself and my village. In many ways, that achievement wasn't simply my own but also that of the people around me, both past and present.”
Helping clients tell their stories
After graduating from AUT in 2021, Grace now enjoys applying her understanding of public relations in her role at One Plus One Communications, a corporate PR and communications agency specialising in earned media relations.
“My role consists of helping clients through various communications opportunities and challenges, and ensuring that their brand stories are told via mainstream media, campaigns and social media.”
Working with clients is what she loves most about her role.
“While a large part of my job consists of crafting media releases and pitching client stories to the media, I particularly enjoy helping our clients through different comms opportunities and challenges. I’m also exposed to industries that I wouldn’t have been otherwise. That’s the beauty of studying communications – it’s relevant to every industry and sector.”
