Gogo George Ntor

Doctor of Philosophy candidate

He was concerned by how slowly legal and ethical frameworks for autonomous ships were being developed, says Gogo George Ntor who is studying a PhD in law to make a contribution to the field.

“Just like in other areas, the maritime sector is witnessing a surge in the integration of artificial intelligence into autonomous ships and decision-making processes. While these advancements hold great promise for enhanced safety, operational efficiency, environmental conservation and resource optimisation, they also pose fundamental legal and ethical challenges. The current legal framework addresses matters related to safety, environmental protection and navigation within the context of manned vessels, but doesn’t explicitly address the role and behaviour of autonomous vessels.

“My PhD research will contribute to the development of robust regulatory frameworks that ensure the safe and secure operation of autonomous vessels. This can help prevent accidents, minimise environmental risks and safeguard maritime infrastructure, thereby enhancing overall maritime safety and security, and revolutionising maritime transportation, logistics and trade. By addressing regulatory challenges and promoting responsible innovation, my findings can support the growth of the shipping industry and stimulate technological advancements in autonomous vessel technology. They can also help nations capitalise on the opportunities provided by autonomous vessels.”

George’s research is being supervised by Professor Paul Myburgh and Professor Allan Beever from the AUT Law School.

An enjoyable PhD journey
George – who came to AUT as an international student from Nigeria, supported by an AUT Doctoral Scholarship – has always had a deep passion for research and solving problems, and says he is thoroughly enjoying his PhD journey.

“As a PhD student you can discuss your concerns with your supervisors, including matters outside your research that may affect you. The wonderful supervision as part of my PhD is opening the door for creativity and independent thinking – every meeting I’ve had with my supervisory team was an ‘aha’ or ‘eureka’ moment.

“Another enjoyable feature of AUT is the cooperative, collaborative and supportive environment. The university provides adequate support for students – we even have a Law School staff member dedicated to checking up on PhD students’ progress and wellbeing. You can’t beat that! The library staff are knowledgeable and supportive, and there’s a plethora of resources for research as well as comfortable spaces for reading and research.”

Being able to study in the heart of Auckland’s city centre is another highlight for him.

“It has offered me a rich multicultural experience, with the opportunity to get to know people from many different ethnicities. I’m proud to say that I have friends from a large mix of ethnicities. I’ve also enjoyed being able to unwind in many of Auckland’s beautiful parks, take part in cultural celebrations and choose from an open-ended variety of food. AUT is also a great place if you have an interest in sport and recreation, and I’ve taken time out to unwind at the AUT recreation centre, play table tennis with a friend, use the treadmill and practise piano in the music room.”

Advice for other students
Expecting to graduate in 2027, George has some great advice for other students.

“For those currently studying at AUT, I’m sure the hard part of your experience will be to figure out exactly what support you really need as AUT has so much to offer. Be proactive and explore your options to have a rewarding and fulfilling university experience. With AUT, you have all you need to succeed in your studies or research, and to support your future goals.”

He also has some tips for those who are thinking about coming to AUT in the future.

“For our future students, I’d say that if what you desire is to see your potential truly manifest, if you seek an environment that is both supportive and inspiring, and a place where your voice is heard, then AUT is truly the place to be. The university is not just modern but also offers a wealth of opportunities. AUT is committed to student success, while promoting wellbeing and study-life balance.

“I’d highly recommend AUT’s Doctor of Philosophy. Undertaking a PhD at AUT provides you with an opportunity to carry out authentic and original research. AUT’s knowledgeable staff and supportive community will open up your mind to endless possibilities, and you’ll get the support you need to do what you’ve chosen to do. AUT is truly inspiring and pushes you to be the best version of yourself, while also producing research you’ll be utterly proud of.”
