Gabrielle Jocelyn Tantono

3rd-year student, Bachelor of International Hospitality Management in Hospitality Management with a minor in Hospitality Enterprise

The practical learning experiences are what she is enjoying most about her studies, says Gabrielle Jocelyn Tantono who is studying a Bachelor of International Hospitality Management in Hospitality Management with a minor in Hospitality Enterprise.

“I’m grateful for the internship opportunity AUT has given me as a social media marketing assistant for AUT’s School of Hospitality and Tourism; an opportunity that would have been hard to get somewhere else. I’ve truly enjoyed the internship opportunity as it allows me to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting, enhancing my understanding of the industry, specifically in the field I’m interested in, which is social media marketing for hospitality businesses. I believe this opportunity enriches my learning experience and prepares me for working in the industry.”

She has also appreciated the vibrant community and the opportunities for engagement.

“The tutorial classes, as well as the variety of events and networking sessions organised by AUT have not only enabled me to make friends with fellow students but also to interact with industry professionals. This networking is invaluable, as it helps me build relationships that can enhance my career prospects. I also love how friendly and supportive the lecturers are. I can feel that they truly care about students.

“I’d definitely recommend AUT because it gives students many opportunities, and its industry connections can provide invaluable hands-on experience that truly prepares students for their future careers. The lecturers are not only knowledgeable but also genuinely supportive, making it easier to seek guidance and mentorship.”

Choosing AUT
After growing up in Indonesia, Gabrielle says she first became interested in hospitality as a way to help her become a more confident communicator.

“I’ve been introverted since I was a kid. When I was about to graduate from high school, I didn’t know what degree that I wanted to take, but I knew that I wanted to improve my communication skills, public speaking and my confidence. When I came across hospitality management, I was intrigued by the idea of working in the industry. I then went to a small college for two years to study hospitality management, while working part-time at a restaurant. Talking to strangers was not that scary anymore, but I felt something was missing and wanted to know more about the hospitality  industry.”

After a few discussions with her family, she decided to continue her studies to explore broader opportunities in the hospitality industry; a decision that soon saw her heading to AUT.

“I learned from friends who studied at AUT that it’s an excellent university. Then I saw that it also has a School of Hospitality and Tourism. After doing some research, I discovered that this school has received numerous awards and is recognised as one of the best in New Zealand for studying hospitality. Hence, I decided to apply. I appreciated that AUT allowed me to transfer credits from my previous studies to my current degree, and also received guidance from the School of Hospitality and Tourism in selecting my courses.”

Advice for other students
Now in the third year of her studies and proud of the grades she has received so far, Gabrielle has some great advice for other students.

“Actively engage in every opportunity that comes your way. Whether it's internships, networking events or workshops, these experiences can significantly enhance your skills and connections in the industry. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help or guidance from lecturers – they can offer valuable insights and support. You should also make it a priority to build a strong network as relationships in hospitality and tourism are crucial for career advancement.”

Balance the different aspects of your life, she adds.

“Balancing studies, work and social life can be challenging, but maintaining that balance is key to enjoying your time as a student. Embrace the journey, stay curious and make the most of your experience.”
