Bachelor of Business in Finance

He decided to study finance after developing an interest in investments while travelling after high school, says Finlay Benton who came to AUT to study finance and now works as an investment analyst at SBS Wealth.

“Coming from a rural background, I knew that knowledge of investments and personal finance can be a struggle to get into for regular Kiwis, so right up front it was clear to me that this was a worthwhile pursuit.”

A large part of his role at SBS Wealth now is researching different investment options, which is something he thoroughly enjoys.

“My job involves a lot of research on both equities and fixed interest investments, among others. I perform regular performance reporting tasks and work with the Chief Investment Officer to produce communications and market commentary for our team of financial advisors, as well as our clients.

“I also run much of the sustainability side of the business, including environmental, social and governance (ESG) screening for our investments. ESG investing is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the investments landscape within New Zealand and abroad, so getting to work on projects related to this – for example helping to decarbonise investments or looking for opportunities in the carbon solutions space – has been great.”

Choosing AUT
Deciding to come to AUT for his university studies was easy for him, Finlay says.

“I chose to study at AUT because of the structure of the business degree and because the courses offered a direct path into the fields I wanted to gain exposure to.”

As well as enjoying his finance courses, he also joined the AUT Investment Club, which was a great way to network with others who are passionate about finance.

“Helping to run events while I was a part of the AUT Investment Club was a highlight. We hosted several events with high-profile people from the New Zealand finance industry and the wider business landscape. I also met friends through the club that I’ll know for life.”

Proud achievements
Finlay – who graduated with his Bachelor of Business in 2021, followed by a Bachelor of Business (Honours) the next year – says there were a few achievements throughout his time at AUT he was particularly proud of.

“During my undergraduate study, I made the Dean’s Honour Roll in the Faculty of Business, Law and Economics. I was also invited to join Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honours society, and was fortunate enough to enjoy my graduation ceremonies with close family, which I’ll always remember fondly.”

Being awarded the China Construction Bank Postgraduate Finance Scholarship after completing his undergraduate degree was another highpoint for him.

“I was humbled to be awarded this scholarship and it ultimately led me to undertake my Bachelor of Business (Honours). During my honours year, I had the privilege of spending many hours working with my supervisor, Dr Jun Chen. It was during this period that I realised just how deep the rabbit hole goes, and that even at the end of my time at AUT my education had only just begun.”
