Eve McLoughlin

5th-year student, Bachelor of Laws & Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management and Employment Relations

Her student exchange was a great way to experience a different way of life and an opportunity to connect with new people from different cultures, says Eve McLoughlin who spent a semester abroad studying at the University of Mannheim in Germany.

“Studying for five years is a commitment, so spending a year in Europe not only broadened my horizons but also added to my student experience and enhanced my academic journey. Mannheim University is renowned for its leading business school. As a business major, I was intrigued by Mannheim’s approach to education and wanted to compare it with my experiences at AUT.

“Germany’s approach to education was very holistic. Mannheim University has a strong emphasis on internationalisation with their Erasmus+ exchange programme. I connected with students from all over the world. I loved this aspect and feel very lucky to have made lifelong friends.”

She loved the new challenge studying overseas offered.

"Being an outgoing person, I potentially underplayed the challenges of moving across the world, being the sole Kiwi, navigating a new culture and language all while balancing university courses and picking up part-time hospitality work. This tested my adaptability, and the experience fostered resilience and adaptation to unique situations, leading to many cherished and memorable moments!"

Choosing AUT
Eve, who is studying both law and business, says she decided to come to AUT because of the progressive culture and modern approach to learning.

“I like the challenge law provides and its specialisation, whereas a business degree appealed due to the adaptability to various career pathways. My studies helped me become more worldly as all my courses are current and reflective of the world. This enables me to be an informed person who can contribute to a wide variety of conversations and topics.”

Whilst law schools are known for their competitiveness, she appreciates how AUT manages to foster a collegial culture amongst its students.

“What sets AUT students apart is how we are very encouraging of our peers. We have a positive mindset when it comes to celebrating each other's success and supporting one another throughout our degrees. Hiring companies value these qualities as in the workforce you’ll be collaborating with others.”

Advice for other students
Eve has some great advice for other students who are at the start of their university journey.

“Think big when it comes to planning your degree. It doesn’t have to look the same for everyone – be creative.

“Reach out to your course co-ordinator to find out how you can align courses to accommodate an exchange experience. Give yourself plenty of time and plan in advance. Familiarise yourself with which countries AUT has university exchange partnerships with.”

University is so much more than studying and grades, she adds.

“It’s easy to think of university as a four-year period of exams, stress and assignments but it can be so much more. Plan for a semester abroad or a workplace experience in another country. The opportunity to move abroad whilst investing time in a degree is an excellent consideration. Use resources such as the Overseas Student Loan Fund offered by StudyLink to your advantage.”
