Microsoft Dynamic 365 Functional Team Lead, Datacom
Master of Professional Accounting student
Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Accounting
She enjoys innovating across the finance spectrum, says Diana Ismagilova who works at Datacom – Australasia's largest homegrown tech company – where she leads the Microsoft Dynamic 365 FSCM Functional Team.
“My role provides a lot of satisfaction to define and implement the finance change and transformation strategy. I’m responsible for the end-to-end project delivery, implementation and configuration of Microsoft Dynamics 365 projects. I work extensively with clients at varying stages of the project lifecycle to interpret their business needs and strategy, and translate this into functional requirements. I’m also responsible for leading and managing a team of talented consultants with different levels of expertise.
“Additionally, as a member of the NZ Baseball board of directors, provisional CAANZ and a member of the Institute of Directors, I align digital initiatives with the organisation’s goals, oversee transformative projects and collaborate with senior management to define objectives. The transformation of the finance team from operational and data entry tasks to a strategic role is an absolutely rewarding process for me. I believe, by shifting focus from routine processes to value-added activities, finance professionals can significantly impact the organisation’s success.”
She is proud of what she has achieved so in her career so far.
“In my professional services career, I take pride in delivering value to my customers and witnessing tangible progress. Similarly, in my board career, I find great satisfaction in contributing to strategic decision-making and driving positive community outcomes. In addition to my work, I’m also a track and field athlete and am proud that at the age of 33 I earned the fern for the first time and represented New Zealand in the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.”
Taking on postgraduate study
As if her career, board responsibilities and sporting commitments weren’t enough, Diana has also found the time to study towards a Master of Professional Accounting, building on the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Accounting she completed at AUT in 2021.
“I wanted to learn more about accounting so I could successfully lead finance departments to focus more on value-added activities, reduce costs and increase effectiveness. I believe the future of finance lies in embracing technology, data, agility and sustainable practices.
“I chose AUT for my postgraduate study in professional accounting because it provides a dynamic learning environment that prepares students for real workplace challenges. AUT offers a collection of the latest articles, events, books and trends. It’s a valuable resource for staying informed about cutting-edge technology.”
She says the people she has met have been the highlight of her time at AUT.
“Finding the best friends during my time at AUT is truly a highpoint. These friendships often become lifelong bonds, filled with shared memories, laughter and support. Whether it’s late-night study sessions, exploring new hobbies or simply being there for each other during challenging times, these friendships have enriched my university experience.”
Advice for other students
Diana has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their university journey.
“For those who dream big, my advice is to never settle for less. I've faced so many discouragements in my life, including having a serious back injury, being in a serious car accident, and being told that I'm not good enough, that I'm too old and that I speak with an accent.
“It’s important to embrace those challenges, turn setbacks into setups for comebacks, and keep reaching for the stars.”
