4th-year student, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Construction Engineering
He has always been fascinated by the process of problem solving, says Dhia Okla who is completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Construction Engineering.
“I enjoy analysing complex challenges and developing innovative solutions, and have an affinity for mathematics and physics, as well as a drive to enhance the environment we live in. Construction engineering offers a diverse range of projects and situations that require critical thinking and problem-solving skills – from designing structures to managing construction processes, every project presents unique obstacles. This greatly appeals to my innate curiosity and passion for finding efficient and effective solutions.”
Dhia, who has been an intern on the City Rail Link project for the past two years, is excited about the possibilities the field of construction engineering offers.
“Upon graduating, my ultimate goal is to establish a fulfilling career in the construction industry that allows me to continuously enhance my skills. I’m enthusiastic about pursuing roles that involve project management, structural design or sustainable construction practices. By actively contributing to the industry, I aim to make a positive impact and contribute to the development of innovative and sustainable construction projects.”
Choosing AUT
Deciding to come to AUT for his study was easy for Dhia.
“The combination of AUT's reputation for academic excellence, industry-focused programmes, modern facilities, inclusive community, and a commitment to research and innovation made it the ideal choice for me. I was confident that my decision to study at AUT will provide me with a well-rounded education and prepare me for a successful career.
“I’d highly recommend the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Construction Engineering to others because it offers a comprehensive education, practical industry connections, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the field. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the practical application of knowledge, the hands-on learning experiences, and the opportunity to collaborate with my classmates and industry professionals.”
He is also grateful for the support he has received throughout his studies.
“I’ve used various student services, including the library, employability and career services, and academic support. These services have greatly enhanced my university experience by providing access to valuable resources, guidance in career planning and assistance in improving my academic performance. I’m also thankful for receiving an AUT Undergraduate Scholarship in 2022 and 2023. This boosted my confidence, motivated me to excel, and made it easier for me to focus on my studies with a sense of pride and purpose.”
Advice for other students
Now in the final year of his studies, Dhia has some great advice for other students who are thinking about university study.
“My advice to other students would be to prioritise time management, seek support when needed, stay curious and open-minded, and make the most of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.”
Don’t forget to take care of yourself, he adds.
“Maintaining a healthy work-life balance and taking care of one's wellbeing while studying should never be overlooked.”
