3rd-year student, Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences in Software Development with a minor in Information Systems
He knew fairly early on that his future would be in computing, says Derek Lien who came to AUT to study a Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences in Software Development with a minor in Information Systems.
“Born and raised in Papatoetoe, South Auckland, I grew up with a very kind and loving family who supported me in anything I wanted to do. Initially, I wanted to be a mechanical engineer, however I was drawn to computers and that resulted in me spending almost all my free time taking apart computers and putting them back together.
“In my family, no one was into computer technology like I was and what I learned about computers was self-taught. This later transitioned into studying computer programming in high school, which eventually propelled me into the world of software development.”
Choosing AUT for his university studies was an easy decision for him.
“Before choosing AUT, I had heard from friends that AUT was more practical in its assignments compared to other universities that focus mainly on the theory. I pursued AUT because I wanted a more hands-on experience in software development. AUT didn’t disappoint. I also appreciated that AUT offers a lot of networking and social events that will help you land a graduate role once you complete your studies.”
Combining computing skills with business
He appreciates how flexible the Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences is, says Derek who hopes to one day work in the space industry and dive into the world beyond our universe.
“Initially, I chose Networks and Cybersecurity as my major, but at the end of my first year I reflected on what I really wanted to learn about. I realised that I enjoyed coding the most, so decided to switch to the Software Development major. I also picked the Information Systems minor because it taught me how software systems can enhance business processes, and how information technology can increase business efficiency.”
He would highly recommend the Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences to other students.
“In the first year, they teach you the fundamentals of every computing major, which helps you get a feel for which major you want to pursue and gets you acquainted with the fundamentals of computer and information sciences. I’d recommend this degree to others because it offers a lot of practical work that helps you understand the purpose of a topic, and there is a lot of group work that encourages students to collaborate and build relationships throughout university.”
Advice for other students
Expecting to graduate from AUT in August, Derek has some great advice for other students who are thinking about university study.
“My advice is to focus solely on yourself and accept any challenges that come your way. Socialise and network as much as you can as it will give you a huge boost when it comes to job hunting. Lastly, never fear failure – failure is your opportunity to be greater.”
His other piece of advice is to remember to have fun.
“As you work hard on your studies, don’t forget to have fun during your student life. There are also a lot of student discounts on products, which for me is one of my favourite things about being a university student. If you’re studying at the AUT City Campus, there are also usually times when free stuff is being handed out on campus, plus there is easy access to food on campus.”
