Intermediate UX Designer, NZME
Bachelor of Communication Studies in Digital Media & Bachelor of Business in Marketing conjoint programmes

When you’re reading the digital versions of some of New Zealand’s biggest newspapers and magazines you may be seeing the work of digital media alumnus Dean Talavera who is now a UX designer for NZME.

“I’m part of a team responsible for designing the end-to-end experience and user interfaces for our digital products, including The New Zealand Herald, Viva, The Listener and Driven. No two days are the same, and the work is a balancing act between designing excellent user experiences and maintaining business value. The team and culture are amazing, offering a strong network of support, and I get to work with some of the smartest people in the industry.”

He loves being able to improve customers’ experience through his understanding of digital media.

“We’ve significantly enhanced our websites’ overall user experience through SEO initiatives, storytelling and a redesign of core structures. This has made a real impact on our digital presence. I’ve also been involved in redesigning our website and creating a design system to improve our workflows. Working at one of New Zealand’s top media companies means seeing your work actively improve the user experience in real time.”

The right path
Dean says his interest in communications and digital media was sparked in high school.

“Growing up, I enjoyed making films and designing WordPress and Tumblr blogs. I’ve always had a knack for creating digital content. I initially planned to study TV at AUT, but after exploring digital media, I found it much more engaging and creatively fulfilling, so I made the switch. I also chose to study marketing to broaden my skillset and create more career opportunities.”

He still has fond memories of his time at AUT.

“In digital media, we got to explore video editing, animation, illustration design, audio editing and 3D modelling. However, the course on user experience (UX) course stood out to me – it sparked my passion for UX and ultimately set me on my career path. The practical elements made learning more hands-on and relevant, and I loved that in digital media we had our own dedicated classrooms where we spent a lot of time working on assignments and collaborating with classmates. It was a great space to bounce ideas off each other and offer support.

“While I was at AUT, I had the chance to meet amazing people from all sorts of backgrounds, each with their own passions and I’ve made some amazing friends along the way. One of the things I loved most was how enthusiastic my lecturers were. They played a big part in helping me find my footing and discover what I truly enjoy.”

Advice for other students
Dean, who graduated from AUT in 2020, has some great advice for other students who are considering their university journey.

“University is the perfect time to try new things and discover what truly excites you. Don’t be afraid to shift your focus if something new grabs your attention – the courses are designed to help you figure out your strengths. Your lecturers and peers are also an invaluable support system. Don’t hesitate to reach out, ask for advice or collaborate with others. AUT has a strong, inclusive community, and building your network will be one of the most rewarding aspects of your time here.”

Balance your academic side with fun, he adds.

“It’s easy to get caught up in assignments and deadlines, but don’t forget to enjoy the experience. Join clubs, get involved in campus life and make memories along the way. University isn’t just about academic growth, but about personal growth too. So stay curious, stay flexible and make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.”
