Breanna Kelly

Communications Assistant, Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand
Bachelor of Communication Studies in Public Relations with minors in Advertising and Brand Creativity & Screen Production

The most rewarding part of her job is connecting with people and hearing their unique stories, says Breanna Kelly who studied public relations, advertising and brand creativity, and screen production.

“At the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand, I craft and execute dynamic communication strategies across social media, websites and EDMs to drive the foundation’s goals and engage a wide audience. I manage social media for both the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand and the Testicular Cancer Foundation; creating content to promote fundraising, educational initiatives and events.

“A highlight of my role is assisting in our annual Blue September campaign to unite the community for an important cause. During this campaign we get the opportunity to get creative and work with several brands and sponsors. In my two years here, we’ve worked alongside Hellers, Bakers Delight and even auctioned off a voicemail from Patrick Gower for charity. I also connect with cancer survivors, interviewing them and then sharing their powerful stories to inspire others to support our digital fundraising efforts and, most importantly, get awareness out there.”

While she admits that she never imagined herself working in the fundraising sector, Breanna says she loves being able to use her communication skills as a catalyst for change.

“This role has been an incredible introduction to the world of communications. It enables me to make a meaningful impact while learning how to engage with diverse audiences.”

The right fit
As someone who was trying to decide between different career pathways, Breanna says she chose a communication studies degree to help her figure out her future.

“From a young age, I knew I wanted to work in media; using it as a creative outlet to not only entertain but also make a positive impact. At first, I dreamed of becoming a journalist but after my first year at uni, I discovered my passion for PR and screen production. I quickly realised that advertising would give me the versatile skillset I needed to explore all of these paths.

“AUT immediately felt like the right fit, with its vibrant community and an energy that made me believe I could achieve amazing things with the university's support behind me. Because my university experience unfolded during the peak of the COVID pandemic, I didn’t get to experience it in the traditional sense. But that made even the smallest moments feel incredibly special. I found joy in my tutorials, cherished the opportunity to assist with open days and had an amazing time working with Outside the Square, our student-run PR consultancy that offers pro-bono support to not-for-profit organisations.”

She also appreciated the support and guidance from the staff she met at AUT.

“Throughout my three years at AUT, I received tremendous support from all my lecturers. Dr Deepti Bhargava, one of my public relations lecturers and course leaders, stood out for her calm and reassuring presence. Whenever the assessments became overwhelming, she was always there with guidance; helping me navigate any challenges. No matter the question or stress I faced, she had an incredible ability to steer me back on track.”

Advice for other students
Breanna, who graduated from AUT in 2023 and is proud of receiving an AUT Academic Excellence Scholarship to support her studies, has some great advice for other students.

“Make the most of your time at university, and don't underestimate the value of what you're learning. There were many things I thought I’d never use, yet I find myself relying on them every day in my job. Enjoy the experience, but always keep in mind the purpose of your journey.”

Ask for help if you need it, she adds.

“There will be moments of burnout and stress, but never forget to lean on your support system at the university – they’ll help you push through.”
