End-User Computing (EUC) Analyst, FletcherTech, Fletcher Building
Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences in Software Development & Networks and Security
What she loves most about her role is the opportunity to connect with others, take on incredible opportunities and represent the business in meaningful ways, says Ashley Groves who now works at Fletcher Building.
“My role revolves around problem-solving, and troubleshooting complex hardware and software issues that first-level support can’t resolve. This includes packaging and deploying new applications or updating existing ones across the diverse businesses supported by Fletcher Building.
“A key aspect of the role is effective communication with teams and end-users to develop solutions that enhance efficiency and drive business-wide improvements. Additionally, providing executive-level support, including assistance to the CEO, ensures that key decision-makers can operate seamlessly; contributing to a more connected and forward-thinking company. I enjoy supporting those in need while tackling complex problems that seem impossible until everything clicks into place. Working alongside amazing colleagues who bring positivity and energy to each day makes the experience even more rewarding.”
Her role has already led to some incredible achievements.
“Leadership opportunities I’ve been able to take on include completing The Achieving Woman's C-School by Katrina Boyle, and becoming certified in first aid to support our core value of safety on-site. I've also been recognised for embodying Fletcher Building's ‘Be Bold’ value, and have had the privilege of representing the company at career fairs and supporting various business-related events like FletcherTech’s first Tech Talk with Nigel Latta. These experiences have shaped me into a more confident and driven individual, eager to continue growing in IT and empowering others to do the same.”
Valuable experiences
Having always wanted a career in IT, Ashley says she chose AUT’s Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences because it included hands-on experience.
“While researching universities, I discovered AUT’s computing programme and was drawn to its practical approach, offering hands-on experience across the degree. The opportunity to work directly with the technology I’ll encounter in the IT industry was a key factor in my decision. I knew that AUT’s emphasis on hands-on learning would equip me with the experience and confidence needed to effectively problem-solve in the field.”
She says one of the highlights of her time at AUT was being able to gain valuable experience and collaborate with others as a student ambassador, an ‘Are you ok?’ volunteer and peer advisor.
“Through these extracurricular activities, I honed my interpersonal communication skills and seamlessly integrated them into my academic work. This proved especially valuable in presentations and leadership roles in group projects, including my final-year research and development project where I coordinated with vendors, the university and my team to navigate specific requirements related to the Google API. My proudest achievement was graduating with a double major in software development, and networks and security; a milestone that reflects both my hard work and passion for the IT field.”
Advice for other students
Having graduated from AUT in 2020, Ashley has some helpful advice for other students,
“Pursue something you're passionate about and that aligns with your learning style; this will enable you to maximise your potential and grow to the fullest. Strive to be your best but always remember to take care of yourself along the way.”
There’s plenty of help if you need it while you’re at AUT, she adds.
“The Student Hub was an invaluable source of support during times when I needed academic or financial assistance, especially during the lockdowns in my final year due to the global COVID pandemic. The team of dedicated and compassionate individuals was always ready to offer guidance and assistance to those in need.”
