Intern – Commercial Team, Auckland Football Club
Bachelor of Sport and Recreation in Management
She loves working behind the scenes with the Auckland Football Club and getting to experience what it takes to put on a successful football match, says Amy Walker who completed a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation and is now interning in the club’s commercial team.
“I’m working in the commercial partnerships team, looking after Auckland Football Club’s sponsors and organising their activations on match day and beyond. I’m enjoying getting exposure to different areas of the sports industry including event management and working with sponsors.
“I love that the organisation is using the sport to create communities and connect Auckland. Of course, it’s also exciting getting to meet the players and see all the work that goes into creating a successful professional sports team.”
Experiences and connections
Originally interested in a career in outdoor education, Amy discovered her love for sport management during her studies at AUT.
“I originally came to AUT as I was interested in studying outdoor education, however after doing one management course in my first year I quickly realised that sport management was the right subject for me as I had always loved sports and enjoyed being organised.”
She says she thoroughly enjoyed her time at AUT.
“I loved that the degree got us out of the classroom! We did three workplace experiences that enabled me to get hands-on experience, put theory to practice and build my network. These networks allowed me to leave university feeling more equipped for the industry, with more than just a degree in my hand. I also appreciated all of the AUT staff, especially Dr Mel Johnston who was my industry supervisor for my final-year workplace experience with the National Sport Club Survey. Mel also connected me with the Auckland Football Club, which led to my current internship.
“Outside of my studies, a major highlight for me was being part of the outdoors student club, AUT OffGrid, which enabled me to find people with similar interests in tramping, camping and just being in the outdoors. I really appreciated the connections and community I felt as a part of this club.”
Advice for other students
Amy has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their university journey.
“My advice to future AUT students is to say yes to opportunities – every experience comes with learnings, connections and knowledge to take forward.”
Make connections while you’re at uni, she adds.
“It’s never too early to start building your network. Every job opportunity I’ve had so far has been sourced through the network I’ve built! The more people you can connect with, the better.”
