Te whare tapa whā

Te whare tapa whā is the Māori model for understanding health. It describes health and wellbeing as a wharenui with four walls:

  • Taha tinana (physical wellbeing)
  • Taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing)
  • Taha whānau (social wellbeing)
  • Taha hinengaro (mental and emotional wellbeing)

The four walls of the wharenui are supported by the whenua (the land or place where you belong) and form your roots. The combined strength of the walls ensure that the wharenui holds. Neglecting any of them affects the balance of the whole structure. Te whare tapa whā demonstrates that the social, spiritual and mental dimensions of health are as important as the physical manifestations of illness.
