Memories I’ll hold onto forever

From exploring countries she didn't think she’d ever see to making friends from all over the world, Bronwynn De Wet loved her semester at Stockholm University.

Why I chose my host uni:

The law school at Stockholm University is the biggest law school in all of Scandinavia! Once I found this out, the decision to be a part of something so large was an easy one to make. Additionally, the uni itself is beautiful – the buildings were modern and there are so many green spaces to enjoy both in summer and winter.

How I found applying to my host uni:

I found the application to study at Stockholm University very easy and straightforward. AUT’s exchange manager, along with Stockholm University’s exchange department were so helpful; everyone was always willing to help!

It was a lengthy process, but not once did it feel too overbearing. You just have to be organised and know when certain documents or paperwork are due. For example, the student visa I got was a simple process that luckily didn't involve me flying anywhere to get pictures and fingerprints done. I could do it all in the comfort of my own home. Staying on top of things was important. Just remember these systems are set up to make it easy for you, so no need to stress!

How I found learning in a different academic system:

I absolutely loved the academic system at Stockholm University. Rather than trying to balance four courses like at AUT, at Stockholm University it was one course at a time over a 10-week period. This meant completely diving into that course, with no others to distract you. It also meant fewer classes at a time which allowed me and my friends a lot of time to travel around and outside of Sweden.

Due to the international aspect of the courses, a lot of the learning came from other students. The lecturer would upload questions about a topic (eg in family law across borders, what are the types of relationships recognised at law in your home country?), and you were to answer them based on your own country and then present them to the class. Buddying up with others from your home country helped lots!

What I gained from this experience:

Going on an exchange was the best decision I’ve ever made. I’ve explored countries I didn't think I would ever see, I’ve made best friends for life from all over the world, I’ve made memories I will hold onto forever, and most of all, I’ve been able to enhance my legal knowledge through an international lens. I feel as though this has helped me grow within my career and personally tremendously. It’s daunting to move across the world by yourself for six months, but to say that I’ve done it and loved it is something I’m so proud of.

Top tips for other students

  1. Bring little bits of home with you! Bring your favourite mug, print photographs of friends and family to stick on your wall or pack your favourite teas or sweet treats. Trust me, having treasures from home dotted around your apartment will bring you so much comfort
  2. Get involved! Go to everything you can that the university hosts, whether it’s hikes, pub crawls, café dates, sporting events or trips; just get involved! That is how I made all my friends – you get to meet likeminded people who are in the same boat as you and just as eager to make friends
  3. Explore your new city and country. It might be uncomfortable at first when trying to figure out the bus routes or trains, but once you have it, you’ll be a pro at getting around the city by the end of the semester. I got a bike and it gave me so much freedom to explore
  4. It’s tempting to do Euro summer beforehand and then get to your city by the time uni starts, but once the AUT semester ended, I worked full-time for about 2.5 months before leaving for my exchange. I was able to save so much money by doing this, which allowed me to travel during and after my exchange with my new besties (you’ve got to love Ryanaiir). I travelled for about a month at the end of the exchange which was cheaper because of it being winter over there
  5. I was fortunate to get awarded the AUT Exchange Scholarship, which I was so appreciative of as it helped with flights and accommodation, so definitely apply for this if you’re able to
