Why I chose my host uni:

I chose Hawaii to live the island life for six months. I love the ocean, warm weather and the relaxed culture that Hawaii offers. I also wanted to experience the American college life and the University of Hawaii at Mānoa (UHM) had a great journalism course that cross-credited with my study. UHM ticked all these boxes and more.

Pushing myself completely out of my comfort zone and going to Hawaii by myself was the best decision ever, and if you’re thinking about doing it, you definitely should!

How I found applying to my host uni:

There was definitely a lot of paperwork. It was a little overwhelming, but I’d just say make to do lists and stay organised with deadlines and emails; don’t leave it all to the last minute. Kirsten at AUT and my exchange supervisor at UHM were very helpful with any questions I had. Also it isn’t cheap, so start saving up and apply for scholarships.

How I found learning in a different academic system:

The uni was very different and took a bit of adjustment for sure. The classes felt confusing at first because they’re graded so differently and had lots of deadlines that were hard to balance with having fun in a new country.

Don’t be nervous to ask your professors lots and lots of questions, and explain that you’re on an overseas exchange. Mine were all very understanding and helped me comfortably pass all my courses.

What I gained from this experience:

Hawaii was actually unreal. I was so nervous about going on exchange without knowing anyone there but I made the best lifelong friends. My roommates were also on a semester exchange to Hawaii with a group of girls. It was comforting being introduced to a group of friends going through the same challenges and rewards of being away from home, and who wanted to make the most of the island.

I’m so grateful for the people I met and how quickly you bond in a short amount of time. I got to make the most amazing memories – pretty beaches, hikes, road trips, bonfire parties, camping, boat rides, even snorkelling with manta rays and sharks…

Academically, studying in another country is very interesting and valuable because you learn from the uni culture and different ways of teaching.  The personal growth you gain from an international exchange is indescribable. You learn so much about yourself – do it!

Top tips for other students

  1. Say yes to every new scary activity
  2. Talk to people in your classes and don’t be nervous to make the first move
  3. Fake it till you make it and put yourself out there
  4. Try to do grocery shop on a budget and cook most meals at home
  5. We found fun free ways to work out together - running, free gym workout class trials and community workouts on the beach
