Fire safety on campus

Fire safety on campus is the responsibility of all AUT staff and students. It's important to take note of the safety rules below and our policy of no smoking on campus.

Safety rules to follow:

  • Never block exit ways with furniture, equipment or other items
  • Don't overload electrical equipment with an excessive number of electrical items
  • Don't interfere with or obstruct fire sprinklers or alarms
  • Don't deface, obstruct or remove emergency signs
  • Keep combustible material to a minimum (including paper, cloth, cardboard, timber)
  • Don't infringe on the safety zones in front of lifts and stairwells; maintain a two-metre pathway clearance
  • Keep at least a one-metre clear pathway leading to any exits in rooms and studios

Smoking

AUT promotes a smokefree environment in accordance with New Zealand legislation. Smoking, including vapes, e-cigarettes and shisha, is not permitted anywhere on campus. This includes all outdoor spaces and applies to all AUT campuses and AUT Millennium.

AUT fire alarm text alert

When a fire alarm is activated on campus, AUT students and staff can now opt in for text alerts. It includes the ability to choose the locations, days, times and specific periods during which the user would like to receive text alerts. Users will need to log in using their AUT network login to set this up.
