More than 300 staff came together to celebrate and congratulate our inspiring teachers and researchers on their commitment to the University, our students and the community, at the annual Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Academic Excellence in Research and Teaching.

Hosted by Vice Chancellor Derek McCormack, with Susan Wood as MC, the awards ceremony saw the presentation of four excellence in teaching awards, recognising our inspiring, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and innovative teachers, who have a commitment to their subject and students.

Awards for Academic Excellence in Teaching:
*    Dr Angsana Techatassanasoontorn (Business and Law)
*    Associate Professor Simon Mowatt (Business and Law)
*    Dr Tomas Pernecky (Culture and Society)
*    Associate Professor Dave Parry (Design and Creative Technologies)

Highly commended
*    James Nicholson (Design and Creative Technologies)
*    Dr Jiamou Liu (Design and Creative Technologies)

A combination of individuals and teams were acknowledged with the five excellence in research awards: excellence in postgraduate supervision, research commercialisation, cross-disciplinary team research, the potential of an emerging researcher and overall research excellence by an individual researcher.

Awards for Academic Excellence in Research:
*    Research team – cross disciplinary early-to-mid career: Food Studies Research Team (led by Lindsay Neill and David Williamson)
*    Transfer of knowledge and/or commercialisation of research: Professor Steve Henry
*    Highly commended: New Zealand Research Tourism Institute (led by Professor Simon Milne)
*    Postgraduate supervision: Tagaloatele Professor Peggy Fairbairn-Dunlop (Culture and Society)
*    Highly commended: Professor Liz Smythe (Health and Environmental Sciences)
*    Emerging researcher: Dr Sebastian Leuzinger (Health and Environmental Sciences)
*    Research Excellence Individual: Professor Max Abbott (Health and Environmental Sciences)

The teaching and research awards were followed by the presentation of the University Medal. It is the second time this pre-eminent award has been presented to a member of the AUT community who has made a sustained and outstanding contribution that reflects and enhances the academic development and reputation of the University.

The 2014 AUT University Medal was awarded to Professor Marilyn Waring, one of New Zealand’s most respected and internationally renowned academics and personalities.

In 2006 she came to AUT to take up a position as Professor of Public Policy. Since then her research has focused on governance, public policy, political economy, gender analysis and human rights. In 2010, Professor Waring received the AUT Vice Chancellor’s award for excellence in graduate research supervision and she is currently supervising 18 PhD students and six students in the Master of Philosophy.

Throughout a distinguished career Professor Waring has had her work published in numerous journals and books, contributed to collected works in economics and related disciplines, and is now cited by researchers, policy-makers and practicing economists throughout the world. She is also the winner of numerous honours and awards.

The announcement of Professor Waring as the recipient of the 2014 University Medal was met with delight, admiration and a standing ovation by her colleagues, friends and family.
