Meet AUT alumnus Mohamud Mohamed – his story is one of vision, resilience, and a relentless commitment to creating opportunities. As a champion of diversity and economic collaboration, he has dedicated his career to bridging gaps; whether in policy, business or community engagement.
His journey from policy advisor to business leader is a testament to the power of lifelong learning and meaningful connections.
"Lifelong learning keeps things interesting and offers a fresh outlook on both personal and professional challenges. Balancing everything is about prioritising what matters." These words define Mohamud’s values and underpin his approach to both his professional and personal life.
After graduating from AUT with a Master of Arts (Policy Studies) with Honours, Mohamud began his career as a Diversity & Engagement Advisor at the Office of Ethnic Communities, where he championed inclusion and representation.
"After graduating from AUT, my career has been driven by a strong commitment to diversity, community engagement, and policy development. I began as a Diversity & Engagement Advisor at the Office of Ethnic Communities, gaining valuable experience in fostering inclusion," he says.
He later transitioned into government policy as a Policy Advisor at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), contributing to initiatives that shaped the lives of diverse communities.
His dedication to refugee and migrant support led him to roles as a Refugee and Protection Officer and Senior Advisor, where he played a key role in developing inclusive policies and enhancing community engagement.
"My focus was on fostering meaningful engagement, ensuring that migrant and refugee voices were represented in decision-making processes, and strengthening partnerships to improve community outcomes," he says.
Beyond his policy work, Mohamud co-chaired the Auckland Council Ethnic Peoples Advisory Panel, advocating for policies that better represent New Zealand’s rich cultural landscape.
Upon relocating to Australia, he continued his commitment to stakeholder engagement, working with Brisbane City Council and later Queensland Health as a Policy Officer.
A turning point in his journey was the realisation of an untapped potential in economic and cultural exchange between New Zealand and Africa.
"Challenges included raising awareness of Africa’s economic potential in New Zealand and fostering meaningful engagement between businesses," he explains. "Overcoming these required building strong relationships, fostering trust and consistently demonstrating the value of collaboration."
Recognising the need for stronger trade and investment ties, Mohamud launched the African New Zealand Business Chamber.
"My passion for fostering connections between Africa and New Zealand led me to establish the African New Zealand Business Chamber. I recognised a gap in promoting and facilitating trade, investment, service provision, and economic and cultural exchange between New Zealand and Africa’s 54 nations," he shares.
The chamber works through partnerships, events, and policy discussions to empower Kiwi and African entrepreneurs, opening doors to investment and business expansion across both regions.
"Engaging with communities, whether through policy advisory roles or business initiatives, has been incredibly rewarding. It has broadened my perspective, strengthened my leadership skills, and reinforced my ability to navigate complex social and economic landscapes," he says.
Community engagement has always been at the core of Mohamud’s work. Through his leadership in both advocacy roles and business initiatives, he has gained a deeper understanding of the communities he serves.
"Giving back has not only allowed me to make a positive impact but has also enriched my career by strengthening my ability to navigate complex social and economic landscapes," he reflects.
Outside of his professional life, Mohamud is a firm believer in maintaining balance.
"Whether it’s staying active, spending time with loved ones or continuously learning, I prioritise personal growth just as much as professional success," he says.
"I enjoy spending time with friends and family, playing sports, hitting the gym and learning new things. Staying active helps me recharge and clear my mind."
Through his work in policy and business, Mohamud continues to champion diversity, inclusion, and economic collaboration. His leadership in the African New Zealand Business Chamber highlights his dedication to bridging gaps and creating opportunities for businesses and communities alike.
His journey is a testament to the power of engagement, resilience and meaningful connections.
