Three minutes to impress
Congratulations to the winners of the 2015 Doctoral and Masters Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competitions: PhD candidate Kudakwashe Tuwe and Master of Sport and Exercise student Samuel Paterson.
During the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition research students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance to a non-specialist audience, with the use of only one PowerPoint slide.
Tuwe gave a compelling presentation on the employment experiences of African communities in New Zealand. He impressed the judges with his magnetic stage presence and the innovativeness of his storytelling methodology. Tuwe is enrolled in the Faculty of Culture and Society and supervised by Associate Professor Camille Nakhid, Dr Carol Neill and Professor Ian Shirley.
Samuel presented on the reliability and discriminative ability of badminton specific change of direction testing. The judges praised his ability to communicate complex scientific content in a clear and easily understandable way. Samuel is enrolled in his Masters within the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences under the supervision of Dr Travis McMaster and Professor John Cronin.
Tuwe will represent AUT at the Trans-Tasman 3MT Doctoral Competition on 2 October at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, while Samuel will compete for AUT at the Masters 3MT Inter-University Challenge at the University of Auckland on 10 September.
Well done to all the finalists from both competitions: Caroline Stretton and Toiroa Williams (runners up), and Khine Thida, Amy Tielu, Blair Speakman, Thushini Jayawardena, Christine Clark, Shabnam Jalili-Moghaddam and Lydia Harrell.
The winners received a $250 research award and a Microsoft Surface Pro Tablet, and the runners up received a $250 research award and $400 worth of Printsprint vouchers.
The competition was chaired by Dr Andy Godfrey, alongside judges Dr Pedro Silva, Associate Professor Erica Hinckson and 2014 3MT winner Stephanie-Anne Croft.
