New Year Honours for AUT academic

Professor Marilyn Waring is appointed a Dames Companion of The New Zealand Order of Merit for her work in the fields of economics, women's issues and aid internationally.

The Queen bestowed the honour upon the AUT Professor of Public Policy on December 31, 2019.

Professor Waring's publications on economics and the environment, on human rights and on women and unpaid work, have had international and national recognition and impact.

In addition, she has supervised more than 70 post graduate theses, across a wide range of subjects.

Professor Pare Keiha, Dean of the Faculty of Culture and Society, says Professor Waring is inspirational and he is honoured to have her as a member of the Faculty.

“I’d like to personally congratulate Marilyn. This honour is recognition of the tireless leadership she has shown in advancing the interests of women and pushing society to better treat each other and the world we all live in.”

Professor Waring led the Gender and Governance team for the Regional Assistance Mission for the Solomon Islands for five years, led UNDP's largest project in the Asia Pacific for the Gender and Economic Policy Management Initiative, and led the Commonwealth Secretariat teams on Unpaid Work and HIV/Aids and on Social Protection.

She has worked as a Technical Expert on Gender and Poverty for UNDP and for AUSAid.

She was Treasurer on the Board of the Association for Women's Rights in Development from 2007 until 2012, a Founding Board Member of the Canadian Index of Wellbeing, a Director of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand from 2005 to 2010, and a Board member of the Institute of Judicial Studies.

Professor Waring was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2008 for services to women and economics.

Since then she has undertaken a number of consultancies for international organisations.

Dr Waring is the Tuakana of New Zealand women Members of Parliament, elected as number 15.
