Journalism Conference gets UNESCO Grant
AUT has won a UNESCO grant to help support the World Journalism Education Congress being hosted at the City Campus in July 2016.
More than 200 people from around the world will desced on AUT for the event, which will have a key focus on current education, trends in journalism, and how to write for multiple mobile mediums.
The New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO has awarded AUT a $37,000 grant to support the conference.
The money will be used towards travel grants for participants from developing countries, supporting the congress’s research project and helping to bring over one keynote and assisting with costs for another speaker.
The Chair of the Steering Committee of the Congress and AUT Associate Professor Verica Ruper says the UNESCO grant is a great help.
"The UNESCO New Zealand’s support for the World Journalism Education Congress is significant step in ensuring the success of Auckland Congress. The partnership between two organisations sets up a stage for promoting good education and media freedoms, two areas AUT and UNESCO are equally interested in. It straightens our efforts to make the Auckland congress a defining moment in journalism education today."
Speakers include Divinia Frau-Meigs (professor of media sociology at the Université Sorbonne nouvelle in France) Kalafi Moala (a media freedom campaigner and publisher and managing director of the Taimi Media Network in Tonga) Stephen D. Reese (Journalism Professor -University of Texas) and Simon Cottle (Professor at Cardiff University)
