Accolades for Shadow A Leader 2022
Shadow A Leader (SAL) is the flagship partnership programme of AUT’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Law. Since it was established in 2012, thousands of students have experienced an invaluable day shadowing some of our top business leaders and partners in the industry.
At its core, SAL is an innovative initiative that supports the development of future leaders of Aotearoa New Zealand.
This year’s Shadow a Leader Week (27 June – 1 July) was supported by 65 Auckland-based organisations that welcomed close to 200 AUT Business, Economics and Law students and secondary school students to their premises for the day.
Yesterday's "shadowers" become today's leaders
We were delighted to welcome six AUT alumni as leaders: Ray Li, Head of Business Development and Youth at ASB; Lisa Tai from Deloitte and a Partner and Pas Peau lead; Emily Parsons, a member of Coca Cola Amatil – Euro Pacific’s legal counsel team; NZME CEO Michael Boggs; and two alumni who participated in Shadow A Leader while studying their business degrees – Joanne Johnson, Project Director of Kainga Ora Home and Communities; and Amelia Hooper, Marketing Manager of The Lending People.
Benefits for all involved
For the SAL leaders, it is an opportunity to dedicate one day to sharing their career stories and organsation insights.
For the SAL students, the value of the experience is perhaps best summed up by Sauniuni Seleni, a final year AUT law student. After spending the day shadowing New Zealand Human Rights Commissioner Saunoamaali'I Karanina Sumeo, Sauniuni said:
“Shadow A Leader at AUT is a fantastic opportunity for students to observe what our leaders in either private or public sectors deal with in their roles - and to see how their decisions can really make a difference in our society. By connecting secondary school and university students to various industries, we can understand the expectations of us in the real world. That connection means we as future students can maintain and sustain the quality workforce to serve the needs of our society and make New Zealand a better place to live.”
