AUT students’ talent with digital media was acknowledged at the YMedia Challenge Awards this year.
The YMedia Challenge which, is in its third year, gets students using digital media to help local communities. This year the competition linked 90 students with more than 30 community groups.
AUT students dominated in both the first and second place teams and of the 13 teams competing, six contained participants from AUT.
First Place - working with Shore Youth Bank Reagan Qiu (AUT Bachelor of Design majoring in digital design) and Ajay Murthy from Unitec. This team made a new website for its community group as well as two videos; one to attract sponsors

Second Place - working with Grey Lynn Farmers' Market
Michele da Costa, Emily Shorvon, Alexandra Speedy and Grace Taylor – all AUT Bachelor of Communication Studies.
Team Grey Lynn Farmers’ Market produced an animation about ‘jetlagged’ food
to bring attention to the benefits of eating locally and also made a promotional video featuring local celebrities
It also set up a message board on glfm.co.nz and produced manuals for the community group on how to use Twitter, Facebook and how to administer the message board.
Award for Most Innovation - working with Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
Dafydd Barrar, Matthew Allen, Micaela Wade and Polly Atkins – all doing a Bachelor of Communication Studies at AUT.
Award for Sustainability - working with Age Concern Counties Manukau
Gizelle Alarcon (Bachelor of Art and Design), CJ Nguyen (Bachelor of Art and Design) and Sandie Chu and Joanne Davidson from the University of Auckland.

Third year Bachelor of Communication Studies students Aurelie Rivalant and Tim Holmberg were also heavily involved in the organisation of this year's yMedia Challenge as part of the management team, attending weekly meetings, recruiting students, organising yMedia events, overseeing project progress and various administrative tasks.
