A quick welcome from AUT's vice-Chancellor, Derek McCormack, got the crowd warmed up for the debate this morning.
With questions from AUT's Institute of Publicy Policy's Director, David Wilson, and Auckland news correspondent for Radio New Zealand, Todd Niall, mayoral candidates came under pressure to answer some of the hard questions.
All candidates agreed Auckland was the economic powerhouse of New Zealand but that it needed to lift its game. Questions around how specifically each mayoral candidate would do that drew typical and similar answers.
Transport and roading infrastructure separated the candidates as did rates.
Tourism, small businesses and social development were also discussed. If you'd like to listen to the 8am full debate MC'd by Radio New Zealand Morning Report host, Geoff Robinson, listen here.
