Five questions: Professor Sharon Mazer
Professor Sharon Mazer

Performances of any kind not only reflect who we are, but construct and tell us how to be more of ourselves in social situations, says Professor Sharon Mazer.

We asked Sharon five questions ahead of her Inaugural Professorial Address – she discussed her research on performances in professional wrestling and its relation to Trump rallies.

“If you go to Te Matatini, what you see on stage is a very constructed performance about what it means to be Māori in the present day. Connecting it to the past, and where it’s really powerful is when the audience stands up and gives a haka in response, in respect of the performance. That closes the loop between the stage and the street, between the performance and the audience,” she said.
