Film documents AUT research
Ōtākaro Avon River, Christchurch

A short film depicting research by AUT School of Future Environments Associate Professor Amanda Yates (Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Whakaue, Te Aitanga a Māhaki, Rongowhakaata) shows how Aotearoa’s cities are acting to meet current complex crises in climate, biodiversity and human wellbeing.

The film, Wellbeing-Centred Cities, shows that positive change is possible, aims to help communities follow that path, and offers a message of hope for a thriving future. It is currently showing as part of the Resene Architecture & Design Film Festival.

Narrated by Associate Professor Yates and directed by Miriama Toms, Wellbeing-Centred Cities features recent and proven examples of how cities are already acting to meet current complex crises - in climate, biodiversity and human wellbeing - and shows the transition to thriving and ecologically regenerative urban systems has already begun across our cities.

The film also presents Ngā Tohu Mauri Ora, a wellbeing-centred urban compass developed by Associate Professor Yates, that assists in navigating city transitions in regenerative ecology, zero-carbon energy, circular economy, urban community, and regenerative built environments.

By documenting the resilient and regenerative change that is already happening, Wellbeing- Centred Cities aims to help others follow that path and offers a message of hope for a thriving future.
