It was a feast for the senses at AUT’s Hikuwai Plaza last Thursday when students and staff from across the University came together to celebrate Diwali.
The annual festival of lights celebrates the victory of good over evil, the triumph of light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.
AUT has the highest representation of Indian students across any university in Aotearoa and the atmosphere and richness of the festival reflected the vast contribution they bring to life on campus.
Taking place until late into the evening, delighted festival-goers packed the plaza, enjoying a beautiful assortment of Indian cuisine from various regions of India, vibrant dance performances, artists and market stalls.
Diwali (or Deepavali as it’s sometimes called) means “row of lights” in the ancient language of India, Sanskrit. For many people, Diwali honours the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. The lights and lamps are said to help Lakshmi find her way into peoples’ homes, bringing prosperity in the year to come.
