Communication Design graduate Tess Costil is the winner of the 2019 Pentland Pol Roger Churchill Design competition.
Her winning submission pays homage to the statesman by uniting his love of luxury champagne and oil painting.
Tess’ design was inspired by Sir Winston Churchill’s last painted work ‘The Goldfish pool at Chartwell’ in 1962. She used digital collage to capture the artwork in a unique and contemporary design which intimately combines the heritage of Pol Roger and Churchill.
She says, “I had a great experience entering the competition, which has been made more special by the news that my design will be bought to life. The brief allowed me to challenge the most common perception of Churchill as a hardened wartime hero and I had lots of fun exploring his artistic side!”
“I was introduced to a new area of design, packaging, which I hadn’t previously encountered. It was a fantastic learning curve and I really enjoyed the process of creating a champagne box for such a prestigious brand like Pol Roger.”

Since graduation, Tess has been focusing on her digital collage artwork. She is also a youth mentor and creative director of The Heartspeak Collective, providing workshops, mentoring and art work to raise funds and awareness for charities, people and project.
Alongside a cash prize and trip to the Pol Roger vineyard in Epernay, France, Tess has also accepted a paid placement at Pentland Brands’ global headquarters in London.
Katie Greenyer, Creative Talent & Networks Director at Pentland Brands Limited says, “We’re delighted that Tess has won the Pentland x Winston Churchill design competition. Her final design is beautiful, with a clear commercial appeal that depicts a joyful story of Churchill and his paintings. We were particularly impressed with Tess’ eloquent description of her design process, and the way in which she arrived at her thought provoking final piece.
“This competition was entered by a truly international audience, and we’re delighted to have a winner from New Zealand. We’re looking forward to Tess joining us at Pentland Brands for a six month paid work placement starting in July 2019.”
